How smart are deer ?

Saw him yesterday. He has not dropped his antlers yet and is traveling with a yearling doe who jumped the fence back in October and can not figure out how to get back over it. When he travels with other deer he becomes far more spooky and does not stop to say "Hi !"

'Farmer' at the end of the lane told me that he has been seeing a family of 6 coyotes crossing his fields lately. That will help explain why the yearling has not left the club grounds. It's dangerous out there and safe inside the fence. The six does on my property still appear each evening, and I live only .5 miles from the club.

I think that I saw him on Monday with two yearling does. I jumped them in some heavy cover, and the does took off in a hurry. He stared at me for about 20 seconds before ambling away. He has dropped his antlers. He has survived another hunting season.

That's early. Around here first fawns appear in mid May.
I think that's way too early, here in Texas we don't see fawns until the end of May, second week of June. I think what Cap saw was probably pig tracks?
