friends come and go they fill a void and sometimes the void is unfilled for years after they are gone sometimes a new friend comes and fills the void by chipping into the brick and mortar in our heart and fills a bigger space that we never knew we had space for.... So "bucky" may be gone but if he is we need to be ready for his replacement when he comes. When the student is ready the teacher appears.....

Doe meat is the best, IMO.
We don’t have many deer here that would be “trophy” quality, so I’d have to take a 10-point if I saw one.

i wanted to shoot a a doe but where we are hunting they winter killed the past few years and the numbers are supposed to be down. hunted this area early this year during the muzzleloader season got nothing but saw a lot (like 30-50 deer a day and maybe 20-30 pronghorns a day) so decided a small buck would be better for the population then taking a doe.

Well, if "Bucky" has given up the ghost? At least you had a relationship with that buck few people will ever have....just hope whoever harvested him has the respect for his life that he honored them with and not waste any part of him.

I still haven't seen, but haven't searched specifically for him. I'm still seeing tracks of a large deer, and a buck is creating new rubs almost nightly. Maybe his girlfriend has taught him survival techniques.

So one or maybe more bucks are making the rubs...do see any scrapes? Most of the time, at least in South Texas you'll see rubs just before they start making scrapes but after the rut you won't see either one.
Another way of telling how big the buck making the rub is, the size of the tree it's rubbing on, usually the bigger the tree the bigger the buck and the height above the ground the rub has been done. Especially if thick lower limbs are broken, indicates a big buck.

I am seeing slide marks on the paths where he is likely driving does. Rub that I saw yesterday was total decimation of a fairly large tree - not a gentle 'think I'll remove velvet' sort of rub.

I've actually watched a small buck, 2 1/2 yr old, 6pts. totally tear up a 3" diameter mesquite tree. Sometimes the smaller less dominate bucks are frustrated and take it out on a fairly large tree.
