How to properly clean my galvanized waterer?

I have a spare that really needs a good cleaning before I can use it, and with the freezing temps ( and the frozen waterers several times a day) I really need to clean it!!!!

Plastic scrub brush gets the job done for me.

I wouldn't use any abrasive cleaners as that thins the galvanizing quickly.
