Hopefully we can get some good ideas using our collective brain power on how to protect our birds from the hazardous smoke that's effecting a good deal of folks in the West of the U.S. right now.
I'm in Oregon and I've got 4 older pullets and 3, 6 weeks old chicks. I can bring the babies inside but, I'm a bit stumped on what to do with the big girls. I was thinking of hanging wet fabric over the ventilation in their coop. The coop is large enough for 10 birds (I have 4), the bedding is fresh and I've put a bunch of fresh aromatic herbs in it today as well. We're expected to have HAZARDOUS levels of smoke for the coming weekend.

Thanks for any and all of your ideas/advice.

Same question. I'm in nw Washington state. I have one hen. The air is making my eyes burn so I'm sure my girl's can't feel very good. The "super massive smoke cloud" hasn't even arrived completely yet. How do we protect our feathered friends??
Well, since you just have one, perhaps if you have a dog crate, you could lay down cardboard and then bedding and bring her inside?
The wet fabric over my ventilation and keeping the girls in their coop is the only idea I've had but, I'm concerned about them being in the coop on such hot days (90s) with the ventilation covered. Hopefully we'll get more ideas later tonight?

I really hope someone has good ideas, it’s horrible to know people and animals are suffering! Maybe some box or industrial fans safely setup to move the air around. Make sure the chickens can’t get caught up in the fan. But that will only work if you have a power source.

I sure hope we get more ideas. I have a guest bathroom I could put her in. I'm concerned about the high temps, too. I can close my house up and put a furnace filter on the back of a box fan. My portable air conditioner doesn't have a good filter. We just don't use air conditioners very often up here.

How is it there where you are now? Best wishes for you and your flock 🙏

I'm iNE of Bend and we don't have central HVAC (never needed it) so, I'll just have to keep the house closed up :( I would put the bigger gals in the garage but, it's too crazy in there right now (lots of materials for projects).
