How to render a chicken unconscious before killing?

I know the subject of how to process a chicken humanely is discussed many times and at length on this forum. However, what I am asking is whether anyone here electrocute or 'gas' the chickens so they are unconscious before you slit their throats, that way they are not aware or feel any pain. A hard knock on the head will do the trick, too, but I would rather not do that.

If you have done this, could you please share how you do it? Thanks.

I have heard of people using dry ice. It will make them pass out and then die. I have never tried it and would read up very carefully because I think you need to get the conditions just right.

If you cut off the head in a single motion they will die instantly and in theory painlessly also.

I imagine electrocution would be more painful than chopping off the head or "debraining" where you stick a knife up through the top of the beak, between the eyes. Again, read up on how to do this properly if you're considering it. Remember, that anything you use to gas a chicken will end up in the blood stream and possibly in the meat that you will be eating.

If you are good with the cleaver, then the chicken dies instantly with no stress at all other then being "held" on the butcher block. Yes, mine first few attempts were not perfect but it is a skill learned quickly if you strive to do right by the animal. I would think the gassing them would similar to suffocation, I've had a panic attack before and it is not a pleasant experience. I believe electrocution would be very painful and it is not instantaneous.
Everyone has their own opinion on how best to kill the livestock, it is up to you to decide what you are going to do.

Thank you all for your reply. I've found a place where I can take the birds to, to be processed for a few dollars per bird. I think that's best for me so I don't have to deal with the whole killing thing.

if you wanted my opinion, which is probably not the case, but id say if you cant kill em, you should be a vegan. otherwise your just running from the truth, which is less metally healthy for you.

I held my meats under my left arm like cradling a football. After a few moments meat relaxes. I’d stroke back their head feathers, wrap my hand around the head, stretch and crank up at the same time dislocating the neck.
No blood. Holding chicken close until movement stops pins down wings and avoids breast bruising.
