How to tell legitimate puppy ads from scammers and puppy mill ads.

Now, I do consider a BYB to be a substandard breeder, but mostly because many of them don't get dogs tested for common health problems....which should be a major consideration when breeding.

Backyard breeders are much like small scale puppy mills. They don't have hundreds of animals, but they certainly don't care about the welfare of the breeding animals or where the puppies go. Just because an animal can be AKC registered (many puppy mill dogs can be AKC registered) doesn't make it a quality animal.

Those health problems you mentioned, yea, those can be expensive and life ending, and are all too common. Like hip dysplasia. When morons breed Saint Bernards, for example, and don't bother even getting the eyes, hips, and elbows looked at, the most basic things to evaluate, they show they truly don't care about the puppies. That they just care about the almighty dollar, since it costs money to test animals, but you can still sell the puppies to the first sucker with cash. If the parents don't have exceptional joints, then the progeny are at a much higher risk for joint problems.

If someone doesn't do available genetic testing for their breed, that might make them a substandard breeder, but that doesn't make them a BYB which term again, has no basis in fact. They're terms the animal rights group throw around to muddy the water. After all, in their minds, anyone who breeds one animal, even if that animal has initials both before and after its name and has all genetic testing done is still a mill.

Many rescues actually promote going through responsible, reputable breeders who breed for temperment, health, and type, and work to better their chosen breed.

I'm aware.

But, not all BYBs do it with bad intent. A lot of pwople seem to think that a dog should be able to experience being a mother. Some don't know about the health problems, and are misinformed to thinking "purebred" means breeding quality. Some are awful and just want a quick buck and aell puppies online, in store parking lots, etc.

Those people who don't realize what they're potentially doing to those pups aren't AS bad as the ones who don't care (some of the uninformed change their minds after learning just how intense breeding actually is). The people who just want money won't stop until they no longer make money.

Is this an anti-shelter thread? I figure I should ask before I continue on here. Because it does seem to be.

No, it's not an anti-shelter thread.

In fact, one thing I was going to point out when we were discussing the so-called "rescue groups", was that in order to weed out the ones who are just pretending to be rescues, would be to do your adopting at a government run animal control. Then you know it's only strays and owner surrenders, and not somebody buying up at the auction, or flipping Craigslist free pets. (Even if it's still a crap-shoot on what baggage the dog comes with.)

Another good source of rescue dogs would be the AKC parent club of your chosen breed. You can rest assured that those are not run by scammers but by hard working volunteers that are bound by their clubs' bylaws and committed to the welfare of the breed they are working to preserve.

And I don't care where you are or what thread you are talking on, if animals are the subject and you want to be anti-PETA or anti HSUS, that's fine by me.

I just had to check. There seemed to be some animosity toward shelters, even though most of them are really trying their best to help the animals that come through their doors.

I do believe both PETA and the HSUS are full of it though XD

PETA and HSUS are like many other unfortunate organizations that started with the very best of intentions, and initially did good works serving an honorable purpose - but have become a victim of their own success and the organization that they are today is such a bastardized thing so far from their initial foundation that politics, financial gain, etc have long since overtaken their original mission as the reason for their existence.
