Howdy From Texas . . .

Update: The hens are in the Haus. My daughter is so excited.

Right now they are exploring their new pad. None of them as of yet have ventured up INTO the coop itself, but I'm sure that will happen soon.

Congratulations!

Wait until you build a bigger coop to get more birds. This one is ok for two birds but not anymore.

Yes.

My brother originally gave my daughter 3 hens but I felt that with out the Run, this would be too small. I'm in the process of thinking about designs now. Trying to keep the costs down while maximizing square footage.

Craigslist free section...keep an eye on it. You wouldn't believe the free wood/coop stuff people give away.

Another question: I've noticed that many of the coop designs, including the one that I have, include some type of poop tray under certain areas, but not in others.

Can someone explain to me the where and why these trays are used and designed in?

Thanks,
TWG
The vast majority of the poop in the coop happens at night while the chickens roost. Therefore, the poop boards are under the roost for easy removal of the majority of the poop. The rest of the coop will get pooped in when they come and go from the nest boxes or when they are waiting to be released in the morning.

So it's just the nigh-time rooting area that has the trays, correct?

Started to work on the new portable Run this weekend. This is a 64 sq/ft Run that can be "attached" to the Red Barn coop I have now.

Trying to find some spare or scrap wire to cover the frame....
