Hubby complaining about dust...

The dust has won! I can't take it any more.

In the beginning, I thought, "This isn't too bad". But, now that they are 4 1/2 weeks old, the dust keeps covering everything like the fallout from Mt. St Helens after the eruption. The more I try to clean it, the more they seem to produce. Our brooder is in the basement, and everything in the basement is covered. The dust is beginning to migrate upstairs. I went out and bought a huge roll of plastic, and this afternoon, I am going to build a tent from ceiling to floor around the brooder. I know it won't stop all the dust, but if I can contain most of it, I'll at least feel like I am beginning to win the dust wars. They go out to the coop in 10 days to 2 weeks (I hope I have it finished.

) Then I can begin cleaning every nook and cranny. I have already decided where to build a brooder area in our coop for the next time...never in the house again. Amen.

I know! I have a roost in the brooder/grow out coop and it was too high for them to use for the first six weeks. I pulled it out and shook the dust off several times over those weeks and it was ridiculous with only four chicks. And, just when the dust slows way down because they're feathered, they start their baby feather molt! Better get that coop done.

Yep, its from the chicks themselves no matter what bedding you use. As long as they are growing feathers well...... Those of us with exotic indoor birds are all too familiar with ongoing feather dust. If you can get hubby agreeable thru this batch, hopefuly you will have a better set up next group. I'm glad I live in warm west texas where they can go outside relatively early.

What about those pine pellets ? I'm using those with a piece of a burlap bag underneath , are the pine pellets bad for the chicks? Also I'm using a bit of stall dry seems to help with the smell a lot.

Get out to the coop and finish it up

. My very first flock was brooded in their coop. No adult birds, they had the hole thing to themselves. I made sure Everything was done before I put the order in for my chicks. So....get on the tool belt and get to work

I'm doing that; but, with my work schedule, I can only work on the coop on Saturdays....I thought I would be finished the coop by now, but you know how that goes........
