hunting

I used to enjoy deer hunting when I was younger and my dad would do all the feeding, take me to my stand, hand me a sighted in rifle then clean my deer. Now iI prefer dove hunting. Its less work and I think more exciting.

Too funny! Dove is fun though. Got 10 on Labor Day. Great eatin'! And yes, less work.

I was all set for opening day of bow season. I had my stand up, trail cam set, and my bait pile was getting a lot of visits by deer. I went to replenish my bait pile the other day and found out that someone came by and stole everything. Now im back to square one. I dont want to stay in that spot anymore if people know that i put up good equipment. I don't think im going to have an opening day this year. Too much to do before the opener in less than a week. Im really bummed out

Oh man!!. Bummed out don't say enough!! That sucks! So sorry. And no, can't stay there. Crooks will be watching.

Hate to hear that. Only thing to say is, they'll get theirs. They'll reap what they've sown. I just hope it comes quick.

All the best to ya

Thanks. Unfortunately, this kind of thing is all too common in New Jersey. I hear about it all the time from 5 or 6 guys every season. I just never thought it would happen to me.

Add hog hunting to my hobbies. Wild hogs have found my yard and destroyed about 1/2 an acre. I have been waking up every couple hours for the past week trying to get a shot at them. I finally did yesterday morning. Not sure if that's gonna keep them away or not. If Anyone has advice on hog hunting ...I need some!

We used to hunt hogs. Now it's coyotes but the same. They tend to follow the same paths regularly. Get a blind, set out food. Hunt at night. Use a green light on your rifle. Used to use a .30-.30 but I just finished my first AR build. (Sweet gun!). Obviously an AR is faster. You gotta be quick. Good luck!

.30-.30 w/green light. Lights up their eyes and doesn't spook them (usually)

My first AR build. 24" Wilson bull barrel. Fast and longer range than my .30-.30

I hunt lots of public land, and I basically assume anything I leave out will get stolen. The only thing I leave out is a cheap ladder stand or garage sale folding chairs and 5 gal pails. Even those sometimes grow legs!! I imagine they complete the formal dining set in a local trailer house.

Hunting public land (or avoiding trespassers on private) is an art into itself. I've taken to making decoy flagging tape trails complete with decoy false scrapes and rubs and deer blinds to steer others in the wrong direction away from my prime spots. My trails are marked only at very critical turns and then I get woodsy with it. A couple of dead branches folded into a V, some leaves kicked away, a couple stray beer cans lined up in a row for waypoints, etc. I make extensive use of a compass and handheld GPS. I leave the truck very early into my blinds and take my time in the dark. I generally hunt from ground blinds on public land. Either a popup tent style I can take with me or a ramshackle blind of some dead sticks just to break up the outline. Hunting from ground level is more challenging. Use must practice absolute movement discipline and work the wind as your scent will be more easily detected. You will need all 6 senses to know when a deer is working in on you so as to be facing the right way for a shot and remain dead still. It is warmer though, and very intense and rewarding to take a wary old buck (or a wary old doe, they're smarter) eyeball to eyeball at 10 yards. It's also easier to curl up and take a nap, especially in a stand of white pine (needles so soft, wind in the boughs so soothing).
