Can't begin to tell you how much I have enjoyed this thread. I believe others have as well, it seems to have been a refuge from all the weather problems we've all seem to be having.
I was thinking the same thing last night! This is the first thread where everyone just gets along despite differences in location/backgrounds/etc. I stopped posting on other threads because I felt my comments/experiences were always under attack.

That is my concern - the trees. I'm inland as well but on a large waterway. That area always floods but they built all the houses up on "mounds" to avoid this. However one year (and I can't remember which hurricane) the hurricane came up the Chesapeake and our backyard was underwater. The house didn't get flooded but I did have to rescue chickens to the shed. After that the treeline was never the same and many have fallen down over the past few years. It also doesn't help they are tearing down a lot of the woods...which are on the wetland....to build an assisted living facility. We had a windstorm this past spring which sent a tree into our neighbors' deck and the back of their house. I think our house is ok but the coop and shed I would put the chickens in to ride out a storm are all in direct paths of being taken out by a large tree. I think our deck is also in harm's way. So...I will probably have chickens in the house!

The current problem up here with our trees... especially oaks, is we've had two bad back to back years with the gypsy moth catapillars. It weakens the trees, having all their leaves eaten, so they're more likely to lose limbs or their root systems in a bad wind.

We have a very large oak in our front yard (branches actually touch the ground) and have had to have it sprayed for Gypsy moth catapillars to keep the tree healthy. Good luck with your tree, ours survived Betsy and Katrina. So don't worry too much.
