I've been taking time to think about how best to help out my fellow Texans despite being 5000+ miles away and unable to physically help. Since I own a small business, I've decided that for every order of 2 or more bars of our soap I will donate $5 to local charities helping with relief. I picked charities helping Houston as well as Rockport, Port Aransas, and other badly-effected areas.

The link will provide more info on when this will be implemented. Stay strong, Texas! Texans all over the world have you in our thoughts and prayers.

Did anyone else see the flooded SUV with chickens hanging out on the roof on the Weather Channel?
I didn't see that, but I saw a whole heap of dogs sitting in a boat, where they'd been picked up by people going around and catching the dogs running around lost.
It seems a little foolish to be worrying about animals when there are people at risk, but I can't help it.

It's not silly at all. Many animals were left behind in the rush to get out. Since most recovery is focused on people in many situations, the animals unfortunately are left. I am so thrilled that so many people are trying to help. I would be out there with them if I could just make it back. We tried getting back, however Wharton is completely shut down, and any other backroad I try to take is under water.
It's frustrating, if only I owned a helicopter!!

Alligators, snakes, fire ants, mosquitoes... lots of unfriendly critters down there. Good thing you don't have piranha swimming around.

Somebody having fun with photoshop.

SO MUCH EASIER! I was saving marigold seeds and started on the basil. Some are easier than others

Won't the leaves be bitter since it's gone to flower? Or can I strip the leaves after I've cut the flowers and they'll be back to normal?

I use it all the time and add the flowers as they also have the same flavor. I LOVE lime basil so plant it every year as well. basil and freshness of citrus all at once. Makes the most wonderful smoothies. Most of my basil seeds I think washed away in all the rain this year. So I only have few plants instead of lot of it.

I almost forgot to ask those of you around the flooded areas.
Have you been eaten alive yet my misqitos?
It started here yesterday morning! I can barely stand being outside for more than a few minutes! It's aweful! No matter what repellent I use they are overwhelming!

We aren't used to many mosquitos but this year they are awful. My neighbor and I are both using eucalyptus and peppermint essential oils mixed in oil, I use olive oil, she is using coconut. Spread it on our skin and the bugs stay away. A plus it is awesome for your skin as well.

one more recovery tip: anone you are paying, check for license and insurance before hiring, also make sure you have a contract you are happy with before signing (but have a signed contract before they start work) and don't pay anyone for substandard work. Can't pass inspection, they fix it or they don't get paid. none of this applies to volunteers.

Great advice!! Even here after a hail storm last spring I have a neighbor that is fighting a contractor that has done half of the work and then what was done has to be re-done because it wasn't done right. Just roof, siding and windows.
