i was thinking about switching to a nipple system but i am not good at keeping things clean so i feel like they would get clogged up rather quickly

It doesn't clog at all, at least in warm weather. The only thing I've been worried about is keeping the water flowing, and the way it drips, keeping the ice below to a minimum.
