Hurricane Earl

Luckily for the roof thing, the attic has a bonus room finished. The windows open over the porch roof. My sons routinely climb out that way and onto the highest roof. Sheesh. Great for adjusting the satellite dish.

So, I'm getting up off my duff and off the computer to get busy. the weather today is LOVELY COOL!

Add to your list: playing cards.

We are about 90 ish miles west of the outer banks of NC and I hate to see them coming. This one we won't really know which way it's going until it gets pretty close. From the local weather this morning we will be ht on the outer edge with not quite tropical storm force winds. I'm thinking New England will get it worse than us unless it's a direct hit. I don't even want to think about a direct hit by a cat 3 storm. It's kinda old hat for me, i've been thru all the big storms here in NC for the last 20 years. One thing I don't like is it's coming at night. I built a generator "house" right beside the electric meter base and put a plug socket on it so it's just start the generator and plug n go. We always have plenty of food so that's no biggie, a guy I work with one street over also has a generator setup and well so we can get water there. Harris Teeter had a sale on beer yesterday so that's taken care of.

Sharon hasn't been thru a big one yet so she's pretty calm unless i get worried. All our pens have pretty secure houses so the birds will be ok, the ducks and geese will stay out thru it all - they always do. There are some 3 month old peafowl and younger turkeys in one pen that will have to be moved into the barn but that's about it. The 'bators have been off for awhile so no worries there and in the brooder barn are the young pheasants and quail, they will be fine.

Yahooooooooooooooooo

Hi Steve, saw the news this morning and immediately thought of you guys. Looks like we get to skate this time, but no one is predicting on Fiona or the possible Gaston yet.

Bring it on, we're ready! Just hate the thought of no internet....

Cape Cod is supposed to get just high winds and rain late Friday - that's all I hope.

I am sooooo thankful I no longer live in hurricane area; spent the first 4 decades on the east coast and THRILLED to be in the mountains now. The most we ever get now is heavy rain and winds...which of course can be very damaging, but nothing like living through a powerful hurricane that hits in the night.

My prayers are with you all in the path of the storm.

As a native Floridian, you will all be in my thoughts and prayers... Try not to worry too much...a Cat 3 is really not that bad...merely the makings of a good party, some bad limb and tree removal and a day to sleep in. I still have my "I survived Andrew" T-shirt, now that was a nasty one. *cringe*

Batten down the hatches and hang in there everyone.

I didn't read all the posts.

Did some one mention to stock up on Pet, Chick, Chicken food for at least 1 month supply.

When Ike came thru here supplies just weren't to be had for more than a month. Luckily we were set.

Water, Store lots of water for yourself and animals. We are in a stay put area, no matter what. We stay and let the coast and South Houston evacuate. But even if you have to evacuate, you may need it when you get back. Our water was good, but next town down wasn't. So we hauled water to friends and their neghbors for months after ward and they came for showers a few times a week.

It took stores around here a month to keep things restocked and we have a Wal-Mart Distribution Center here. So stash Canned goods, paper goods, plastic spoons And Forks. Back in the time of Rita, I ran out of Trash bags, Amazing how many bags you need to clean up afterward. And that is with burning the burnables.

Chainsaws, Axes, people had to cut up trees to clear the roads. Until that was done, no one could bring supplies into our complex.

With Ike we had no communication with the outside. Cell phone towers were down. So let people know on the outside of your area, what you might need after a week if this happens to you. Talk to them well before the storm hits. My Daughter knew to bring gas and a generator, a case each of tomatoes and canned potatoes if she didn't hear from us, (our block combined foods and we cooked at one home). She had to bring her own gas to get back out of the area, too.

Just saw the updates. Boy this could be interesting.

I live on an island in the Gulf of Maine. Things could get HAIRBALL!!!

Making all the prep. Power outages happen all the time here so I am not worried about that. Trees falling, roofs coming off and the birds. Those are my worries.
