Hurricane Irene - Watch out East Coast

survived the hurricane but it turned into a tropical storm by the time it landed here in my part of ct. Lots of twigs and one large tree limb down. was near the chickens run. but didnt hit it. i didnt sleep well just so worried about the huge pine tree we have in front of the house. all went well. the chickens and ducks had to be locked up just about the whole day. they were going mental inside. once 4pm hit, it was just windy. but enough where i could safely let the animals out. sorry for your house damage. yikes. glad everyone here is safe.

My chickens were so stressed when I brought them inside *sigh* I felt horrible about it. We got the wind and a little rain but nothing came down in our yard. At one point I considered just taking them back out to the coop, but figured if I did something would land on it just to spite me, so I kept them in. I took them back out this morning and they were THRILLED. Put a little electrolyte mix in their water, gave them mealworms for a treat, fluffed up their pine chips, and snuggled them for a while. They destroyed the laundry room and there is chicken poo everywhere. Clean up will take a while I think. How exactly do I get poo off of a concrete floor? I had layed down a sheet and pine shavings, but they decided the other half of the floor would be more fun. And the dryer. And the washing machine. And a box of Christmas ornaments

BUT! They are safe and they are happy now. Worth it! Still - concrete floor, chicken poo. How do I make it go away? Scrape and scrub?

The third pic with the brick wall, did the tree "lean" the brick wall outward? If so, it is MAJOR repairs and I hope you can shore it up. I never heard of anyone not doing anything until the insurance guy gets there, who knows how long unless you let him know immediately and he is on his way. If he is one of those "take a number" on the list for you having to wait, I would NOT waste my time because the water and rain damages would be much more and insurance will not pay for that much more.

I've had tornado and ice storm damages and we immediately take down trees and other barriers, tarp roofs, etc. and insurance guy would come out and inspect the damages. Never a problem.

Seems the attitude about whether or not you should get busy securing your home depends on your insurance company and their policy as well as your relationship with your insurer.

A good conversation is in order, no absolutes. What would they like? You know? If your insurer knows you they are more likely to trust you to a. not exaggerate the claim and b not make things worse and c. not make repairs and then claim more expenses than you actually had.

We weathered it fine, in-laws not so well. Water gushed into their basement from around a water line entry point into the basement wall. We have some big branches down and the area has lots of flooding. Minimal damage because everyone battened down the hatches. No missiles available to go through windows. During the night it got pretty scary, our goat pen really wanted to leave the ground and in the morning my garden fence was so saturated that it just sort of keeled over.

We spent much of the morning of the storm going to neighbors houses and helping the elderly put away lawn furniture and even trimmed one lady's tree away from her house for her. Why did we all weather this OK? Because we were prepared!

we lost power for 2 hours and had minor property flooding. my cousins checked in from long island all is ok besides downed trees and some flooding they still have their homes intact. schoharie county in upstate ny is still in a state of emergency is amazing 20 minutes to the county line and its like the apocalypse there. And to think my mom laughed at me for preparing for the storm seems the jokes on her where she lives was flooded and she was stuck in her house

Hub got the day off from work since his job is in schoharie county and they are saying no travel roads must be kept clear for emergency vehicles only. Sucks his job is shut down but it sure beats being washed away by floded roads to try to get there.

I have WHAT in my yard? :

sorry about your inlaws but your a cool neighbor we did the same secured what we could and what couldnt be was bought in. Hub ran out of time to secure the coop so I wasnt about to let them perish if that was about to happen. Getting pelted and running through the mud they were all in a closet safely for the duration as it turns out the coop took in some water but they would have managed ok but either way they made it through the storm and for that i am thankful.

power is back on. my house is livable until the cranes arrive to remove the trees. then we can see the rest of the damage and if the structure is still sound. doesn't look like anything that some elbow grease and a big bag of money can't handle. all in all it should be fine. i'll just keep on, keepin on.

Sorry you have to deal with this and 'keep on keepin' on.' The Princess and I lucked out but East, West, and south of here the state is a mess and the rivers still have not crested.
