Hello we have a 12 year old much loved cat who developed hyperthyroid last year. He is on Felimazole But the vet just recentlly raised the dose to 20 mg a day..lower doses just are not controlling it. He briefly mentioned radioactive iodine as an option, which is costly and also horrible imo because of the long quarantine period after the injection, but considering the annual cost of repeated vet visits, two kinds of meds, and testing, we are beginning to look at the radioactive iodine treatment as an option. I have researched it and it does work as far as all I could find on line, and also what the vet told me. I have heard and read about other alternatives such as vitamin supplements, vitamin e treatment, and so forth. I'm curious if anyone else has experienced this and what you have done to treat and what the results were. Our cat seems happy enough, he still goes out, plays, purrs. But he is a lot weaker and a bit lethargic, his TE is frequently lowered on both eyes, and he is very clingy now. Vet says he is ok now but it is only a matter of time before he severely declines, so we are researching everything we can. Please help, if you can.

How do you feel he will do worth the quarantine period? That is something to consider as sine cats are likely to have more issues with it than others

That's what I worry about most. He is so very needy. Most of the time he wants to be with me every second. He's like a dog. And I don't know if he'd have any human contact at all much during quarantine or if he did if they'd be wearing protective gear. That would be scary. But when he was hospitalized for a few days for something...I can't remember what it was..he warmed up to the nurse and she was his pacifier during that period.

But we are going to go ahead with it. I have researched the procedure and feel it would be stupid not to do it. there will be several cats in quarantine who have all had the procedure on the same day in there with him; so he won't be alone, exactly. He is having it done at one of the best facilities in the Country, so I am confident that it will be money well spent. I hope so.

That is him above....making sure he's totally spread across whatever it was I was doing...and happily sound asleep. Please wish him well..we love him! :)

Haha thanks. :D Probably sometime in mid July. We have to wait for our vet to sent the clinic his info and test results, etc, then they will schedule. He only has to be in quarantine at the vet's for three or four days, but then when he comes home he will not be allowed outside for three weeks, which he will hate. And we have to dispose of all his waste and litter in a metal sealed trash can and keep it for a month before we throw it in the trash, which I will hate!! And we will only be able to handle him 10 minutes at the most a day for the same period of time. But after that, he will be home free and forever cured..unless he is in the roughly two percent where it doesn't work. And it is not as expensive as I thought, so that's a plus, too. Just scary. I don't like radioactive stuff....:duc
