I Am Looking For A Surgeon To Decrow My Rooster

If you're not allowed roosters where you live. Having him decrowed is not going to help. You will have to get rid of him anyway. No roosters means no roosters. Do you really think complaining neighbours care they will still complain. Then you get slapped with a fine or worse told to get rid of them all.

the sentiment against decrowing is understandable but I do wonder if folks understand what is happening all over the country, it's getting harder and harder to find fertile eggs and more and more areas are making roosters illegal, it's gotten a bit crazy. as more and more farm land gets eaten up in development as the suburbs sprawl, this will become more and more of an issue. the vet on the above thread link explained the procedure very well, and if done properly is not "ripping out the vocal cords", it's making a small incision so that rooster can not build up as much pressure and crow as loudly. it's kind of a brilliant solution if you ask me. the alternative is that nearly all roosters are getting put down, very few can be rehomed.

I am with the OP on this one. There is no money in it is why vets don't do it...I would think. Who is going to pay $300 to decrow a roo they paid $5 for as a chick? Not many. I have 2 roosters...rarer types...Svart Hona and Serama---and have fairly close neighbors. I AM allowed to have roosters here, BUT---for my neighbors consideration...would gladly pay $300 a bird to have it done, BUT---no vets do it in Ohio. Darn. The procedure is not 100% successful either. So..my only option for a more quiet rooster is to use the collars. Nice...I'll just choke my bird to death..NOT. Tried the collars, they are not for my birds. Too dangerous. SO---because I'd decrow my roosters surgically...and not willing to use a collar...am I a bad chicken owner??

we've put down 6 roosters so far this year. we'd love to keep just one but as long as it crows, we will get turned in by the neighborhood, period. I'd gladly pay $300 for a good rooster and send it around to friends with hens for coital visits, but I have not been able to find a vet to do it.

Yes---it is so easy for people to say...just rehome him. Umm..do you chicken folks realize how many roos are trying to be rehomed? I guess not. Many, many, MANY roos are butchered...or just plain killed...not even eaten due to them being a roo....because nobody wants them or can even have them--with their big old cockadoodle doos.. Poor fellas. I love my birds ..they are all spoiled..as they should be.....and I do raise chicks from them here and there. My flocks are small.... 5 member hobby flocks. My Roosters are gorgeous...and I am not about to get rid of them. I do try to be considerate of the neighbors...which is why I even started researching the decrowing. What state are you in? My extension office told me it is simply not done here in Ohio....which is crazy due to all the chicken keepers here.

So many people want to “modify” their animals for convenience. Declawing, debarking, etc. provides no benefit to the animal. The only time I’d ever consider de-(insert noun relating to animals here)-ing is if there is a serious health concern such as cancer.

It’s better to rehome a Roo instead of decrowing him.

for every hen hatched, a rooster is hatched, there are literally millions of unwanted roosters created a year. I do see decrowing as a humane alternative to beheading.
