Wellll, it went fine. We had cleaned out the parasite's work vehicle and put together all of the evidence that we could find there, there was plenty. I had asked him for his receipt book last week. He said he couldn't find it and may have left it at a customer's house. So this morning, I "just happened" to be working out front where the work vehicles are when he drove up. They don't start work until 7:30..... But lo and behold, here it was 7:00 (still dark) and he's already here. So when he stepped out of his vehicle, I asked him if he had been able to find the book over the weekend. He says "Noooo, but that's why I'm here early this morning, I'm going to clean out this truck and see if I can find it". He knew that there was incriminating stuff in the truck so he got here early so that he could dispose of all of it.
I told him "Well, I'll tell you what.... You're fired. I have all of your belongings from the truck in the shop. We're going to step over there so you can get those and then when we're done with that, you're going to get off of our property and don't even think of ever coming back". He said okay.... so we walked over to the shop and he asked "Are you going to tell me what's going on? I asked him if he thought I really needed to tell him and he said "Yeah". I said "Parasite (I called him by name), you've been stealing money from us". He says "How have I been stealing money from you"? I said "Do NOT play me for a fool any longer". He said "I'd like to know what's going on". I said "You just need to leave before I change my mind and decide to notify the sheriff's dept." His eyes got big, he said "Okay" and off he went. I wanted him to think that we had only found one or two things and were just letting it go with firing him.....and not notifying the authorities. Don't want to give him a reason to hightail it out of the area.
He had been purchasing parts on the company charge accounts (which he was authorized to do), then installing the parts and doing the repairs and pocketing the money..... Nice setup, huh? He only did this with people that were new customers or not regular customers. He still turned in SOME work reports and checks and even a little bit of cash. But the larger cash amounts and checks were just too tempting, I guess.
We did not speak with the DA's office ourselves.... Our friend the former sheriff spoke with an assistant DA and set up our meeting for tomorrow. This being Columbus Day...... the DA's office is closed. There was no way that we were going to allow him to work one additional day for us so he had to go this morning. At this point we have lots of his notes and basically a daily journal of all of the customers he spoke with. We will turn that and everything else we found over to the DA and hope we get an indictment. We also have a lot of customers that will be willing to help when it comes time for providing cancelled checks and even testifying. The DA's office or the police could not have prevented him from leaving as they would have needed a warrant for his arrest or a search warrant. It may have been chancy to fire him without "backup" but we felt like this was the best way to proceed. He would have to be an idiot to add assault to the charges he's going to be facing.
As far as having an employment service screen prospective employees, as I said earlier we are a small company. Including the parasite, we had 3 whole employees
. Now we have two. However, at this point I think my husband will let me handle hiring and firing from now on and that WILL include in depth background checks. We've been burned a couple of times, but this one takes the cake. A very expensive cake.
My husband is so funny
. Last night he was on the internet googling "stolen checks". I asked him why he was looking that up. He said that that's what he had done..... Stolen our checks
. The penalties for stolen checks are amazingly light and he was a little ticked about that. I told him to try looking up embezzlement. LOL, he was much happier with the penalties Texas has for THAT! Tomorrow brings the appointment with the DA's office. I'm looking forward to finding out how we proceed from here.
My husband has surgery scheduled for Wednesday to remove a Basal Cell, please keep him in your prayers.
