I am the prey..pictures page 6

Yes, it is. I have so many encounters recently, I won't list them all. The worst that has happened was that my dog got scratched on the head when he went after one in the yard and the boys were approached by a cub out in the yard. We have 2 large males that keep coming back around and just don't seem to be worried about us being there or the dogs anymore. They are getting more brave. These bears are not afraid of us. One started charging when my DH went out to condition it, all DH did was walk into the back yard at that point. What if I didn't know it was there and me and the kids walked out there?
There are strict rules on bear handling and Animal Control cannot do anything until they have been proven to do a certain amount of damage to someones property, I'm not sure of the amount. Law enforcement has their hands tied by the state government.

$500 in livestock or property damage gets them a trap and a bullet.
I am so sorry about your dog. Did you call fish and game that for sure should get it a trap and bullet. I just pray we are safe. I am going to keep my eyes open and see if I can get you a vid of the bear by the dumpster.

"thewarriorchild I'm sorry I'd missed this thread. I'd been frustrated by the last one & thought given my issue with high blood pressure that the stress with dealing with the bears themselves was enough and so to argue with people who spout off with ridiculas things like "they were here first" I just cut that from my life. Those things don't help when we've got a bear pounding down the garage door..... I'd moved all my chicken feed into the garage & of course the garbage is in there & so they were literally trying to bash in the door last year...

Anyway I wanted to tell/warn you *HUGE male* like 700 lbs along the stretch that use to be one of the entrances to Jungle Habitat that's now open to that new grassy area alongside of Battenellie on the new stretch of Greenwood Lake tpke. he's the biggest I've seen in a while & we were just in awe & of course went home feeling like we should be building a fortress... LOL Anyway wanted to give you a heads up because heaven only knows how far that one is traveling these days.

Aside from the story I recounted in the posting to panner it's been quiet here. I think last time I spoke with you was the weekend I'd been hurling pot lids out the window of the 2nd story that had that young male quicken his step. I think the following day I took the hose over the fence to him too but aside from that It's been quiet. My husband said that the neighbor apparently has his son home from college now & his dog is a some 100 pound bulldog that trees that same male like daily... I'm hoping the thing is just tired of it here & has stopped coming this way... I can dream anyway.

How's things by you the past few days, I've been thinking of you...."

I am tired so if I am wrong just forget this but if you are referring to the letter about why dont I get rid of my chickens that wasnt in a post but in an email. It actually came out well as she took a moment and thought about it and now sees my point.

Yea!
I worked the polls Tues and was out a lot of yesterday and today so I havent seen anything. The dog and older birds were fidgety today. I hope we do NOT see that bear. I feel like such a boob sticking my head out of the door and looking around to see if I can step out my door, everything that moves makes me jump and a squirrel almost made me close my head in the door lol

So far I havent seen anything since last I said... I hope the bear doesnt go after the dog...

"Besides, the only hole trap I have made in a long time was to trap a human. Should have just covered that hole up with him in it too."
Now there is a story I want to hear!!

I find this type of irrelevant political B.S. very offensive, panner.

As it happens, I had several members of my own extended family murdered in a multiple shooting many years ago. I am still a staunch opponent of the death penalty.

Please stick to the subject, and leave the irrelevant stereotyping slams out of the discussion.

I'm sorry but Panner has a point here because what I find ofensive is that we have people making videos like this one.

telling people it's a "bluff" & yea it IS a bluff but what she is doing is conditioning the bears to be ok being around people & be in & out of our yards & it's SHE that is creating the problem bears & THEN she'll blame the problem bears on to high a population & tell people to "wash their garbage cans"! This woman gives positive re-enforcement to these bears & then cries when they need to be destroyed "just for being a bear". Well it was "just being a bear in our back yards when it tore up all of our chickens but we don't see her showing that do we???? & Panner has a point with the correlation of people saying one thing & then swinging in a different direction when it is them.. And he's also correct in that the Native American was best when it came to wild life management...

One has nothing to do with the other. An idiot making videos has nothing to do with the death penalty.

And, as it happens, native Americans were wiping out a lot of wildlife in their local areas before the white man came. Just read up on Indians in the Smokies for a few examples.

well you'd asked (or perhaps told) him to stay on topic & frankly I was trying to focus toward the releivant part of his posting with him commenting on Native Americans etc. Do you really want us back on the topic of predators & the danger the prostesting group puts us all in?

As for the Native Americans they had a respect for Mother earth and took what was needed & utilized all of it. They didn't wipe out millions at a time just for the hides....

I read the whole thread, so I'm ignorant for not thinking that shooting the bear is the answer? Well you're certainly entitled to that opinion.

Perhaps I misinterpreted something. I personally wouldn't call having a bear outside in the yard being either trapped or attacked.

I DO actually understand that wildlife that's run out of room to live can be problematic. The point of my post was the curiosity about everyone's immediate answer to KILL IT. To me it seems exceedingly rash- especially coming from "animal people".

But that's just my opinion.

I'm sorry that having read this thread here you have had trouble understanding this isn't a problem with "a bear". House doors, garage doors & windows bears are breaking into *all the time* this has been explained many times in this thread by me & others... Thewarriorchild is dealing with a bear that has "two collars"! The FEAR she has is from the attack on her coop from last year where a bear went through the door to her chicken house. It's true the bear wasn't in her home but watching it rip up her chickens & listening to your child screaming because it's killing her pet duck (truamatizing). A door to our homes isn't any more difficult for a bear & people here where we live are trapped in their homes all the time.... Thewarriorchild is not afraid of a home invasion without reason! Last summer an elderly man here had his front door bashed in by a large black bear & he was trapped in his bathroom.... The police, animal control & DWLF&G get so many calls their heads are spinning.... And keep in mind that many know that a call to the officals results in nothing more than a report of the encounter & so don't even call anymore, which means the numbers the cops give of nausance calls is not reall accurate.

I'm sorry you're unable to follow the MANY precauctions we've already taken that makes this not really "everyone's immediate answer to KILL IT" We ARE animal lovers & there's nothing "rash" about any of our reactions because we live with this on a daily basis.

Oh & when I said your ignorance is showing & asked you to read back it was also because of this.

"The best bear deterrent is to remove outside food sources. Keep garbage and animal feed in metal cans that the bear can't open. They'll snack at bird feeders & etc but things like that aren't enough food for them to return for a meal. Bears are smart but lazy. If your chickens are not accessible to them they shouldn't try to eat them. Bears are omnivorous but are opportunistic feeders."

Removing the food source isn't a deterrent it just has them breaking into houses with more frequencey.... And if you go to thewarrior's picture link you'll see that there's no place to put a chicken that isn't accessible to a bear.... We've tried all of these things and we've said as much here I thought it was ignorance that you'd missed having read it all...
