I bought a mare on New Year's!

Just an FYI.. I would have her front feet x-rayed before restarting her. WIth her neck that cresty.. I would have her looked at for founder.
I just house/horse sat for the holiday for a lady and her 7-9 yr old palomino, I am not sure the exact age.. foundered this last fall.
Just for your own knowledge and knowing the correct feed, what things you may have to watch out for, for her, and restarting her.

She is gorgeous though!!!

She's half Andalusian. They are supposed to have cresty necks.

A friend of mine is looking to buy an Andalusian and we went to a farm this summer to look at a few and the mares there who were purebred had HUGE necks.

Thanks all. I'm going to be breeding her to a Shetland Pony, double registered Mini. He is Mini National Champion Model Stallion, Reseve Nat'l Ch Senior Stallion, and National Ch. sire, the first and only year he went to the nationals. In 2007 both his sire and dam, Michigan's Hart Breaker, and Bon Jon Running Fawn won USEF jget of sire and get of dam, respectively, classes 159 and 160 at the ohio state fair, if anyone felt like fact checking. His sire, Michigan's Hartbreaker is extremely prolific sire of winners, and a fine harness pony in his own right. Bon Jon Running Fawn has produced some very successful show ponies also, in addition to Michigan's Majestic. Full brother Michigan's Golden Eagle did extremely well in the show ring in harness. You can see the pony at the top of the page, the chestnut and white tobiano, here: http://advancedequinedental.com/id68.html

You
can look up his sire and dam "get of" wins here: https://www.usef.org/_IFrames/competitions/compSearches/compDisplay.aspx?cid=102&year=2007

Here's
a link to the farm the pony came from, stallion page. Hartbreaker is the second one down, read his blurb. It is really quite impressive. The breeders said at the Nationals that Majestic is the closest to a carbon copy of the sire, of all the horses they ever bred by him.

Perhaps my ignorance is showing.. I should wear a slip...
how can a shetland be double registered as a mini.. I thought mini's had A and B sizes and the B size max was 38 inches. The GORGEOUS stallion you want to use looks a bit bigger than that or else the handlers are awfully small...
But you know we do need another Teddy O'conner!!1

He is 40" at the highest point of his withers. Minis, for some strange reason, measure from wherever the last hair of the mane sprouts out.

Minis accept shetland ponies that are under 38" at the end of their mane. I wasn't at the nationals, so I don't know how tall the handler was.

LOL Teddy O'Conor! Andrea (stud's owner) just today was saying the same thing. She wants to breed him to a tall, hunter type mare. I told her my friend boards a mare pretty close by, maybe two miles away, that would be a great test cross. I should email Barb right now and tell her she can breed to him! Doubt she will say yes, but maybe...

I'm glad to see someone is giving her a chance...I get real bent out of shape with these dressage queens who think they need a mountain of a horse to perform dressage. They wind up looking like mice riding elephants a good deal of the time. Funny how Lendon Gray has made it happen with small horses. Many smaller horses are a LOT more flexible than a lot of larger ones and they have fewer soundness issues too. Large size is not a surival trait in horses. I think you should give it a try with this smaller mare and show them how it's done, she's lovely! I know of someone very local to here who saved a mare out of a kill pen who supposedly was barren and she just had a foal by a very good TB sire, and they are going to be able to get the papers too...too bad on the people who disposed of her now! It was on their dime that she was bred and they got rid of her because they were told she was not in foal! You just have to love it when you hear of these happy endings and success stories with animals that are disposed of by elitists.
