Well there is three things that can contribute to male
Hackle feathers
Saddle feathers
Large red comb and waddles for a young bird

Yes sometime the breed can contribute to the females having a bigger comb at a young age.

Some breeds of female even tend to have slender hackle feathers even if they are female

Ex:
I have had multiple easter eggers have very slender feathers

I have had a couple with saddle feathers that were female
And like you said above his your chicks comb was 2x bigger then your rir
 
Going to post my 6 week old pics. I think I know, but always open to a 2nd, 3rd, 20th opinion!!!

And finally 2 Amerecaunas. One blue, one black. Blue one had me thinking roo at one point, because it is twice the size as the black, but looks like a pullet to me now. Black I think is a pullet.
