I CANT WAIT ANYMORE FOR THESE EGGS!!!!!

By the looks of your girls, you should be seeing eggs within the next couple of weeks and honestly, if they're singing the songs (none of my POL pullets squat for me and they've been laying for a few months now) and if they're taking interest in the nests you're closer than you think. Be on the lookout for yolk stained litter...I noticed that a couple of weeks before I started getting any eggs from my pullets. They were laying soft shelled, incomplete shells or even shell-less eggs and eating them a couple of weeks prior to me finding whole eggs.

I do a check all around the property every few days. I look in dark, quiet places. I look for any places that look like it's been fluffed up or matted down. I haven't had any luck finding a hidden nest tho.

I'm joining this thread if you don't mind as I'm desperately awaiting my first eggs from my black and blue copper marans. I have other older hens that are laying(although not many at the moment with them moulting), so I hope that doesn't discount me, but I'm desperate to see some of those dark brown eggs. Unfortunately I don't know exactly how old they are but their faces have turned red and they are allowing one of my young cockerels to mate them.

My very own first hatch of chicks are now 20 weeks so they must also be getting close and I'm really excited to see if they lay blue eggs. They are farmyard mutts by the cream legbar cockerel and he should pass on the blue egg laying gene.

Mine free range and there are all sorts of places that they could get into which would be inaccessible to me, but I'm about during the day quite a bit and I'm not hearing the egg song from them, and I've kept them in a couple of times just to see and there were no signs of anything on those occasions, so I don't think they are being sneaky.

I did wonder if I might not get eggs until next spring with the days being shorter now, but that's an awfully long time to be on tender hooks each day! If that is the case, someone put me out of my misery please!

Thanks

Barbara

OMG I just got my first egg today!!!!!!!! It was from my RIR! The only problem is that she LAYED it of of the perch and it cracked a little. Do any of you guys know how to get her to stop doing that and get her to lay in the the nest boxes? BTW I. Tried the ceramic egg method. Thanks so much for your help and support on this journey to the first egg! I wish you all the best of luck on your first eggs! Thanks again!

Oh yeah, I forgot to show you the pic!

Awesome!

They like to lay in dark, quiet places. You could try putting up little curtains or something around the openings to the nest boxes but leave enough space between them so the girls can see into the boxes and place the artificial eggs in there as well. Pullets seem rather confused about the whole process in the beginning but once the first gets the hang of it, the others seem to catch on a bit quicker. Some never seem to get it though.

thanks for the help! also, do you guys know if it is ok that the layer is still eating starter feed? I have 6 chicks living with them. they are about 12 weeks. Also, when can I eat the eggs? I am sorry, I am so exited right now and I have so many questions! thanks so much again!
