I don't like my eggs :( ???

I have California Whites I was told that they will produce the "commercial" egg. I figured this is how I would get used to fresh eggs. My dad had chickens when I was little but I refused the eggs. My DH says if I want chickens we are not buying eggs, I agreed with 7 kids and chickens I will get used to the eggs. Now I am worried, I didn't realize that there was a big taste difference.

the reason why they are thicker is because the are getting the proper diet for i chicken where in store bought eggs are just being given feed to lay not have quality so they are not as rich as a farm fresh egg
egg shell color has nothing to do with taste hope this helps

Wow this thread just blows my mind!! I could never go back to store eggs now. Even when my girls aren't keeping up with our consumption

and I have BUY eggs, I go way across town and pay $5/dozen for the local farm eggs..... they just taste soooooo much better. Plus I can't bear thinking of those poor commerical layers crammed in 4 per sqare foot -or whatever it is- in a dark warehouse.

Would it help if you knew how infinitely much HEALTHIER your own eggs are for you than store bought? if they free-range at all, your hens' eggs have:
• 1/3 less cholesterol
• 1/4 less saturated fat
• 2/3 more vitamin A
• 2 times more omega-3s
• 3 times more vitamin E
• 7 times more beta carotene

The dark yellow color is indicative of how much more nutrients are in there. Just like dark greens (like spinach, chard, etc) are so much more nutritious than pale iceberg lettuce and celery....

I hope you can learn to love your own fresh eggs.... they're so wonderful for you, your family, and the environment!

I hate to belabor this thread, but here is the chart on farm fresh eggs with a varied diet vs egg factory eggs. I can't tell that much taste difference except in boiled eggs (sorry), but my kids did not like the yolks at first and quickly got used to them (especially fried, which I think they are addicted to at this point).

Well the eggs my ladies are laying have a slight sweet taste, which is great since i always add a pinch of sugar to my omelet mix. I have read diet determines the flavour of the eggs, only makes sense. As for white or brown I'm no longer sure the old saying brown eggs are local eggs. I have 3 barred 2 prods 2 lt brahmas, 2 cornish and 2 cochins and one of my birds just started laying white eggs. not sure which one or why

.Since they only started laying in the last month i haven't identified whom lays what eggs, yet . I am finding it interesting that i can tell who laid some of the eggs by the color and the shading or specs on the eggs. do eggs have a "print" from the mom or am I just spending to much time with the girls

. Could be my neighbor noticed they were "spoiled" as they all followed me around

"Fresh eggs from chickens raised with love" hehe makes the eggs worth more

I have had faarm fresh eggs off and on throughout my life. The last ones were about 4 years ago, when we had a neighbor that would share every once in a while. My new hubby was raised in Atlanta and had never had a farm fresh egg. He couldn't figure out what all the fuss was about when I wanted chickens for eggs. I am very impatient, and my babies are only 8 weeks old, so I went to a sale and bought 4 grown laying hens. Only one is laying, and that is every other day, but as soon as I found the first egg, I brought it in and cooked it and a store bought egg for him to try. He liked the farm fresh egg, and said he could really tell a difference. The fresh egg was creamier. I can't wait til I have eggs running out my ears!!!!!!

I gotta admit that I nearly gagged the first time I made scrambled eggs from our girls--they were THAT bright and different tasting! It took me a while to get used to eggs with FLAVOR in them! And I'm not squeamish about things--we've raised and processed our own meat, raise our own fruits and veggies, etc. So, I think it just takes some time. Plus, the reason I started this at all was for the nutrition and to not contribute to an industry that (IMO) inhumanely treats its animals... I kept reminding myself of that until I got to where I am now--it's completely inconceivable to me to buy store eggs and I'd rather go without when the girls aren't laying well than have those tasteless, colorless things again

Tx_dane - I had to laugh at that comment. I can't completely relate, but with vegetables, not eggs. I grew up in Interior Alaska in the 70's and we were lucky to get canned vegetables the day the truck came in. Fresh and frozen were unheard of up there at that time. My husband grew up on a farm and is used to the freshest of the fresh and it drives him insane when I tell him I don't like fresh peas, green beans, etc because the have "too much taste"!

Could very well be all in my head, but Pearl White Leghorns have a different flavor to them. They are different than the brown eggs for sure. But what do I know?
