I feel like I'm a dying breed

You should see the looks I get when I tell people that I currently do not have running water in my house, and that I lived for 2 years without running water or electricity.

I was born and raised in Oakland, but have been a country girl at heart my whole life. No matter being in the big city I surrounded myself with horses, dogs, and gardens. I moved to Nevada County when I was 16 and fell in LOVE. With the country lifestyle. I spent every morning cleaning barns, went to ROP and interned at a few cattle ranches up there, I worked full time and spent the rest of the time winterproofing a friends barn, and just enjoying watching the sunset over acreage. I would walk to school, surrounded by pine trees and the smell of FRESH air, it was wonderful..

I recently moved to Sacramento, and while it is nothing like Oakland, it is back to the urban way of life. When I have my career path set out and have a steady income, my goal is to have a nice home on some acreage, somewhere between 5-300 acres anywhere from California to Montana. I want dairy cows, meat pigs, meat birds, and enough land to have a nice garden with corn and such. It hurts almost how much I miss the country and how I want to settle down somewhere with livestock. Hopefully I will find a DH with similar interests! Or at least who will put up with me.

I love the hard work, and enjoy animals, so hopefully that will happen soon.

I am envious of those who own any amount of acreage, and live in the country. With you all in spirit! lol

Some of the school districts that have contacted me up there don't have running water and you also have to empty your own chamber pot,, honey bucket,, you know? They have a hard time getting teachers. I've given it serious thought but those districts don't allow me to have my dogs or cats,, some do. If you can find other housing you can have them.

What REALLY concerns me is that 50 years ago it was soooo normal to raise your own produce, and to a point, meat. Now, people like us are looked upon as weird.

I could go on about genetically modified foods, but I will let everyone do their own research. Google is your friend (Sweden).

Well, as a honest to goodness city girl, I can see where others are coming from. However, unlike most of my friends, I know how to raise chickens, garden, and I am going to teach myself how to sew and quilt. We may not be the best ones around (Yes, I buy my share of processed food) but we're getting there!

Quick question, every single plant we've done in our garden has epically failed. What can we do to fix this?

If it worked before there was running water it can dang sure work now...lol

What districts don't allow animals? That's INSANE!! Everyone has critters here!

I didn't know there were other SHTF or TEOTWAWKI peeps here! Where they at!

I am in my 20's as well and it is appalling how my generation thinks. People freak out when I tell them I have chickens or don't have a cell phone. Girls from my classes are MYSTIFIED because I keep fish for eating and rabbits! To me that's NORMAL! LoL

I just wish I grew up where I had exposure to farming and "older folk" that actually know what they are talking about. I would really like to learn what to look for in a good horse.

My bf and I have had to teach ourselves everything we know!

Get Carla Emery's Book the Encyclopedia of Country Living. It is a WONDERFUL book that touches on just about everything.

Most districts don't allow animals if you live in the teacher housing. If you live on the economy you can have them. If I did go up there I'd have to find a place to live, I'm too animal oriented.
