I have a question on DE???

ctfeathers, I'm not picking on you but you have to realize that misinformation is more than a agreement or disagreement. You can talk to the American Poultry Association and a host of people who've been raising poultry for years and you will get the same info on DE as a wormer or mite control. It is not effective in regard to poultry regardless of what the pseudo-environmentalists say. It is good for the garden, which is where I use it.

I don't feel you are, and I'm fine with this as it pertains to poultry.
I was asked a question about my dogs, and my vet, and I answered them. I made references to the misinformation based on facts, such as, being ineffective when wet.
If it was unclear I was speaking specifically to my own experiences, fine, I will own that.
I don't know what stance the poultry community has taken on it. But I am a part of the scientific community, and I know what stance has been taken there. Next time I think I will just stay out of it. Sorry for any hurt feelings that may have been caused.

DE is for ridding of insects with an exoskeleton, which really is all insects. Mites and lice fall into this but not worms. It is not intended to be a wormer. I use to prevent/control mites and lice by sprinkling around coop after a cleaning or when new bedding is put in. I get food grade so in case they happened to eat it it will not kill or harm them.

JMO: Most worms are the result of ingesting mites, lice, fleas, flies, etc. Which is why if you use DE in your coop and run and put it in their food (to get it into their crops) it will HELP with prevention, but not necessarily always preventing worms.

It is kind of like spraying a dog with flea spray or giving them a flea dip. It will help keep the fleas off the dog, which will in turn keep them from ingesting so many. HELPS in preventing worms in dogs, but does not wipe out all possibilities of them getting worms.

That is incorrect. Most nematodes are carried by snails, slugs, earthworms, beetles which thrive in moist tall grasses where they can be shielded from sunlight. Keeping the grass down on range and in the yard, and keeping moisture out of the coop is the way to avoid a breeding ground for worms which infest chickens. DE does nothing for this and spreading it around in the coop where chickens pick and scratch only makes the fine DE particles airborne, thus causing respiratory problems. Emulsified concentrate insecticides with Permethrin or Rabon are far more effective and safer to use in the coop to prevent lice and mites. Keeping a clean coop also prevents a myriad of problems.

I bought a 20 LB bag of DE from Tractor Supply, it's called Red Lake Earth Diatomaceous Earth with Calcium Bentonite. On the bag it say's, Guaranteed Analysis: Moisture, Maximum...8% Ash (Mineral Matter), maximum....95% Ingredients: Diatomaceous Earth Calcium Bentonite It also say's FOOD CHEMICAL CODEX GRADE

Is this stuff safe for chickens to get rid of chicken lice and mites and safe to put in their food like it says on the bag? I don't want to harm my chickens, just to get rid of the chicken lice and the mites! Is it also safe to put on chicks?
