I have a tiny yard AND I want chickens

I love the bantam idea! Get some Silkie Bantams.

Who wouldn't love to have one of these in the house?

Hello Huffer. Welcome to BYC! There is tons of info here and very good people to help you on your journey as a new chicken owner. :)

If you want to get the most out of BYC, I suggest you do the following:
  • For general education, spend some time browsing the Articles link above and possibly the Learning Center. You will find excellent information for both newbies and long-time chicken owners there.
  • When you have specific questions, most of the time a quick search will come up with the answers.
  • If you don't find anything useful that way, post your question in an appropriate sub-forum. People here are very helpful and will answer your question even if it has been asked 100 times before.
Enjoy your time here.

Your yard is certainly large enough to have 2 or 3 chickens plus a smallish coop. Do check first that it's legal in your city, as well as with your homeowner's association (if there is one), that chickens are legal. In such close quarters there's no way to hide them and even hens can be quite noisy once in a while.

I would hesitate to go with ANY bantam that has a reputation for being broody. :old Especially Silkies or Cochin.

Broody hens have their place... but in a flock of only 2-3, I don't think so. They are grumpy hags who never leave the nest and DON'T lay eggs for however long it takes to break them PLUS another 1-2 weeks before they start again. Plus broodiness seems to be contagious, that's all you need is all your bantams broody. :barnie Bantams are fun, I have a whole flock of them. But I personally would go with 2 full size hens or get bantam NON broody breeds.

Also note avoiding breeds that are known aggressive (like Reds) might help keep the peace. A couple of breed comparison charts might be helpful for you. And note that most feed stores start getting chicks on Feb 1st. And they might even have a list of breeds they will be getting in every 2 weeks for the season, so you can decide which is your best option and hold out for the date you want. I have 2 LFS and they get different chicks from each other. :pop

I recommend getting 2-3 bantam hens. They are much smaller than standard chickens so they will take up less space. Some good breeds for kids are Sillkies, Orpingtons, Cochins, or Easter Eggers, which all have a bantam variety.
I might add that although the eggs are much smaller, the yolks are about the same size! In addition, Silkies are very docile and friendly and I think a good pick with your young children. :)

Our bantam named butters is the cutest cochin ever!!! Love the bantam size. I stick mine in my work overalls while i clean the coop and walk around. They are warm bundles of LOVE:)

and to Backyard Chickens!

I would go for 2 or 3 Black Australorps. Many call the stealth chickens since they are fairly quiet. The square feet amounts quoted in the thread are ideals actually. You can raise happy chickens in much smaller space--If you consider what they get in an egg battery, you are doing much better with what you have available(1 square foot per chicken is generous in a battery)
