I saw an episode on Animal Planet once where a woman in the UK had a large snake and she was feeding it chicks (dead/frozen). The snake was underweight and not near as long as it should have been, and they told her that chicks are not good food for snakes. I BELIEVE she ended up feeding it rats. Ech, but hey - good protein, I guess!
Wait - is she buying YOUR chicks to feed to her snake? Or, just feeder chicks in general?
If it's your chicks that she's buying, then I think you have a right to be mad if you believe she's aware that you sell your chicks to be pets/egg-layers.
However, if she just told you in passing that her pet snake eats chicks, I don't see the problem. That is a plain and simple truth. Many pet snakes eat chicks. It is the way of the world. Some snake breeds prefer birds to rodents and are picky enough to starve themselves if not fed birds. Many people and places breed chicks and ducklings specifically to be fed to snakes. That's nature. People eat chicken too. People who eat "cornish game hens" are just eating baby chickens. I see no difference.
Quote:
What is wrong with it is that she KNOWS I keep my chickens as pets and if any chicks are sold they are expected to go to a home for meat or eggs.
This is the same person that told me she had cabbits (cat/rabbit crosses)
She sounds like a drama queen looking to see your reaction. She just wanted to be mean in my opinion. Ask her if she has any extra snakes you can feed to the mongoose you are getting.
fair enough that you don't like snakes. Everyone has their own personal likes and dislikes. But, it is reality that they live in this world and need to eat like everything else, and many people keep them as pets. I personally am a snake-lover and an everything-else -lover (except moths and caterpillars - I have a totally irrational phobia of them - stupid, I know). My dad bred snakes as a side-business when I was younger and I helped feed mice, rates, pinkies, chicks, chickens, ducklings, ducks, bunnies, and many other cute-and-fuzzy critters. I loved the feeder animals as well, but in my mind it is the way of the world. I have had many many critters as pets and I love them all great and small and I accept what they eat as part of nature.
