Frozen mice around here are $5 (used to be $3, don't know why they went up), chicks are usually about a buck. For larger snakes it's worse, with $9 for a frozen rat vs finding a $5 roo on craigslist. I have not lived anywhere where chicks were not significantly cheaper than frozen rodents. I have a friend who I have to kill the chicks for, because I know she's too squeamish to kill them herself and so would feed them live if I gave them to her live. In fact, that's the main reason I've come across for people feeding live . . . it's just hard for them to kill something themselves, and it's easier to let the snake handle it. I know the question then asked would be why not just buy frozen, then, but I will never fault someone for saving money where they can. Most snake owners are not sickos or vores, but just plain ol' lovers of snakes.
