We get those all the time--they're killdeer! The first year, we were grading, and I moved the nest and momma didn't move with it
Tried to incubate them myself with a light bulb, but not being a bird, it failed.
Second year, there were 4 nests when I mowed for the first time. I flagged them with orange flags, which apparently alerted a predator--only one set of eggs made it.
Third year, there were 3 nests, and my friend's daughter smashed the eggs in one (she was 9!!! and did it on PURPOSE to see what it looked like inside--GACK!!) but the other eggs hatched. I found a little family crossing the large-gravel driveway, babies a-stumblin, and picked one up to give the kids a look, and quickly put it down for momma to find--they're persistent little critters!
Last year, there were 3 nests again, all hatched, and I caught the tail end of a hatch--it was spectacular! They're like ducks, all hopping about right away! They were kind enough to let us catch them and play for a bit while momma circled around, emitting a freaked out sort of scream, which called several other killdeer to join the chorus until we released her offspring!
Those blue eggs and babies are miraculous--we had a similar tiny nest and tiny hatch last year, and love seeing and holding them once they got big enough to fly and return to the nest! Great shots!
