I Lost My Whole Flock!

So sorry to hear of your loss. I've lost several birds to them, too.... and it's awful to find the leftovers.

I ended up calling Fish & Game and they sent the trapper out who left me an assortment of traps. (Thanks!) The only proviso was that I return them empty and clean....actually, now that I think of it, he came back in two or three weeks to fetch them. The traps took care of a number of skunks and raccoons that season.... Had a friend who was a taxidermist that was willing to do the dirty work and empty the traps about every three days. Turns out he took the skunks and stuffed them in a sleeping pose and would place them on people's car seats. (Practical joker....)

I can relate. Twice before, something has torn into my chicken wire pen, wiping my whole flock out once and most of it the second time. Last month, while I was out of town, it happened again. Whatever it was killed everything. Once, it was dogs, and they were caught in the pen. Still no idea what it was the other two times. I am giving up on the chicken wire coop, having it torn down, and building a new pen of reinforced hardware cloth that won't be so easy to tear into. I have an aviary made of it that nothing has gotten into, so I think it will be safe. Unfortunately, it is encumbent upon us to spend the money and make the effort to make predator proof pens.

I lost my ducks to coyotes last fall so I know how bad you feel.

do set up some traps. I bait mine with eggs to get coons and skunks. A .22 works good on dispatching them.

Duckling, I live in Va. I do not have any ducks, but I am hatching out some chicks, if you want some you are welcome to some.

Sorry to hear that. We lost over 100 chickens last summer to cyotes. Didn't even know they were around till our St. Bernard died at age 14. We got one pyr last fall (Snowy) haven't lost another since. We got another pyr puppy last night, (Brandy) she's 8 mnths old to help Snowy out. We know when the cyotes are around b/c she takes off like a bat of you know what all night long. She even killed one 2 wks ago.

Thanks for that generous offer! But I'm going to have to refuse. I already have 24 fertile eggs in the 'bator, which I just bought. These are the last living parts of my duckies! Thanks though!
