I Lost My Whole Flock!

I am so sorry. I lost a two month old Pekin duck to a fox yesterday and the other duckling looks so lost today it breaks my heart. I am so glad the coons have yet to figure out a way into my coop. I worry about the chicken door because I just have a toggle on the inside at the moment and I know there is the possibility they could figure it out. We haven't had coons around here for a few years (the neighbor shoots them) but you never know. Good luck. They love scrambled eggs (no pun intended) and marshmallows.

Hi, My son told me to take fishing line and tie a single hook to it. Put the hook in a piece if chicken meat, or steak. (A solid meat). Tie the other end to something sturdy. They eat the hook and can't get away! I didn't do it I found me a homemade trap! But he did and he swears it works. It's worth a try until you get traps! Goodluck!

By the way you might go to Walmart or the hardware store and by a latch that is like what they used on old timey screens. Only now they have spring and slide on them that locks. I haven't had a coon break into anything!

Sometimes I have trouble opening them!

I felt your pain before. The death of my babies becouse of a preditor is very depressing. Dont blame your self becouse it dosnt help. Just try as hard as you can to do your best next time.

I got a racoon. I trapped it and the trap was set right next to the house. I painted its tail yellow, because I couldn't kill it..... If it ever gets caught again I will though.

I cannot say it enough there is only one sure fire way to stop a coon and that is a layered defense #1 is a perimeter fence that must be electrified and not with a tick tick fencer but a solid state job where the juice is there all the time the next is a solid coop and lock it at night but if you give a crimminal 24 hours i nthe dark to try to crack a safe it will get cracked 3rd line of defense is either or both monion lights and a motion driveway beeper the light goes on and the beepers rings will deter some unwanted uglys.... ELECTRIC FENCE IS A MUST!!!!!!!!

I lock them in their coop at night, which is now the most secure I can make it. On the door to get in, I have a lock that can only be opened with a key. On the door to the run, the lock is on the inside. There is electric fencing around the perimeter, and there is 6" of fencing buried below the house. There is fence covering all ventilation holes... There are no more ladders left near the house... Lol.. I don't know how much more predator proof I can get.

Raccoons are quite intelligent, and rapidly become trap shy. I doubt that yellow tailed coon will ever enter another trap, but sadly enough it may come back and try to enter your coop. Trap and release serves no purpose other than to educate predators. Good luck, and I hope the coon does not return.
