My chicken recently contracted botulism and to my surprise I have gotten her through it. Everyone laughed at me but all have followed my FB posts on the matter and my once very blind and paralyzed jerky headed chicken is now up, active and regaining her sight (much to my amazement). The other day she actually laid an egg!!! I was so surprised and excited, but now my husband won't eat the eggs. I myself, am actually a little concerned, but as I want to reunite her with the group once she is feeling back up to snuff I need to know that if she is over this is it still in her system and will it pass it on to us in the eggs. Please help if you have any info on this as I have spent 2 days looking on the internet and cannot find anything very credible to share with my husband. Once she is back with the rest of the gals all the eggs will look the same and then we will really have a problem. For now she is living in my house but is now gaining strength and getting restless. PLEASE SOMEONE HELP US.

I found this: http://forum.backyardpoultry.com/viewtopic.php?f=5&t=7962629

I wouldn't worry about your girl's eggs because 1) botulism is anaerobic and eggs are aerobic (a chick wouldn't be able to grow in it if it didn't allow the permeation of oxygen through the shell), and 2) it is a spore found in soil and in rotting material and a freshly laid egg is neither.

You could also call your local university extension and ask to speak with an agricultural expert or a microbiologist.

You are amazing!! Thank you so much. I will be the first to try the eggs (great link by the way). I will let you know how all turned out. If you don't hear back.....well. Just kidding thanks so much and I am really not worried at this point. I am pretty amazed though how you found that link. I searched for a really long time before asking BYC for help. Thanks again and God bless.

Well I am happy to report that the information was right. I am alive and well and so is my chicken. I have eaten two eggs now and my wings are not paralyzed and I can see fine!!! lol. THANKS SO MUCH!!! I really hope this post will help all the people like me who have googled this subject to no avail. God Bless.

Yay! I'm glad all is well. I think I'd have been wary about eating her eggs, too. It actually helped me to find that information, too, in case this happens to one of our flock.

When I was 18 months old I had botulism poisoning from honey and my mother said it was very scary because I was like a rag doll (she didn't know then that it was due to the honey). She rushed me to the doctor, who had no idea what was going on and sent me home with my parents. Imagine! I was almost fully recovered within 24 hours and years later my mother read something about botulism poisoning and its effects. She finally had an answer to the mystery!
