It kinda depends on what the purpose is for the bird. Barred Rocks are wonderful for friendliness and good egg laying and smartness. All around good chicken. If you want a lap chicken silkies are very nice and cute, but need a little extra care with all the feathers and need an enclosed space so they can be safe as they can't see too well. You really need to check for mites and lice on silkies too.

We love all our chickens, EE for color, production reds because they are machines and our OEGB group is a riot, most talkative birds we have, will hold a conversation I tell you!

We have a few breeds but the BO are by far the friendliest and most easily handled girls of them all. I hear they are good layers(they're still young) but can be broody. Good thing I bought those as pets for my daughter so we'll have them for the duration - nice enough that I don't mind keeping them around.
