I rescued a tame chicken and now I'm a chicken owner

Wow, what a brilliant thread!

This is a PERFECT example of how incredible our community is! Thank you all for giving me even more reasons to brag about being a part of BYC!!!

These Welcome Wagon folks sure are amazing, aren't they? BYC IS amazing!! :love

Now it's looking like Rosy will be a permanent member of the family. Nobody has responded to the lost chicken flyers. So now, it's time to consider getting her a new friend so she isn't alone. I read the information on introducing new chickens but it's all about flocks. Is it any different when you're introducing a new chicken to just one other chicken?

I would get two or three or more chickens, not just one more. Spread the joy!
Get pullets or hens, not males. It's safest to get chicks from a hatchery, but it's the wrong time of year, at least here in the north.
You're in California? There will be chicks at the feed stores, or check back with your new local 'chicken friends'.
Good luck, Mary

Depending on where you get the new chicken from, I wonder if you guys can introduce them and see how they are. When I got my 10 weekers the breeder but them in a big box and the first pair did not like each other and stood in the opposite corners. The second pair stood next to each other and took to each other right away. I wonder if there is anyway to do something like that??

Congrats on officially becoming a chicken owner. I hope all is well with all this rain!!!!

Thanks for the update! I sm super glad you were able to keep her as well. :)

When you get a buddy for her, I give the bird a good check for and illness, bugs, etc... I would then cage the new bird in her run/coop/or her area and let them both get to know each other like this for several days to a week. If you are mixing birds into large flocks, its best yo keep them separated for a couple of weeks. In this case since its only 1 new bird to 1 new bird, 1 week should probably be enough.

Good luck with this new journey!! :)

Thank you for the update, I am so pleased to hear that Rosy is doing well :clap

I have found myself sadly down to one very lonely chicken and because she was not happy, I bought her a friend and waived quarantine etc.

I am definitely not suggesting that this was a good thing to do but because my remaining chicken was lonely and I introduced 1 chicken who was also lonely, after just a few hours separated, they slept on the roost together that night.

I think their need for company outweighed their need to squabble :)

Once they had settled, I then introduced a couple more via the correct quarantine method and ‘look but not touch’.

I saw chicks at the feed store today. Is it okay to introduce chicks to a young adult hen? She's not laying yet, but she's not a baby.
