My first pip has slowly sloowwwly worked its way to having a hole in the membrane, was just a blinking eye visible for the longest time but now the beak is poking around so I am cautiously optimistic (it's on the wrong end of the egg). And I have a second pip, in one of the blue eggs!
What did you all use for your eggs to hatch on? I have heard of an egg carton, just the metal mesh that comes with the bator, egg cups, and the stuff you lay down on cabnets. I forget the name. Im trying to decied what I should use on Monday for lockdown..hmmmmm

Last time I used the foamy shelf liner. I left about 1 inch on all sides open. It's really important that you cut a hole to add water. (somewhere below the vent holes) Otherwise the water just beads up on top of the shelf liner.
This time I am hatching in egg cartons. I wanted to try it last time, but chickened out at the last minute. So I'm trying it this time.
Lost 3, the 2 questionables which stopped developing a while back and one other that didn't pip and just felt dead even before I checked it. The others, the last 7 or 8..... had to be helped, most were vaulted skull problems in addition to me leaving hubby alone with the bator....
He opened it to help a chick get untangled from some dried membrane and didn't get the lid back on right........ most were shrink wrapped once I saw what was going on. Only one looks like won't make it, we'll see.
In the mean time, I had to bring the broody in, wind is kicking up more and it's dropping fast, didn't want any problems. So she's in my bathroom with ALL the hatched and dried chicks so far, 10 or 12 I think, happy as a pig in mud.
KDbeads Sorry you lost a few. I lost a couple before and this hatch I lost some too. I got one right now "resting". I hope he makes it, but we'll see. I ended up candling some of these last few eggs. 2 were quiters and 3 I can't tell (marans) and 2 I had movement. So they are still in there except for the defenent quiters.

I tried the egg carton thing (put it in at lockdown) coz I kept seeing it on here. I wasn't impressed. Plus I had at least 2 pip upside down and they can drown in the carton that way, better chance on their sides. (both are alive though, I took them out of the carton before they zipped)
Next time I'm getting the grippy shelf liner and leaving the eggs on their sides for the whole thing.
