I think my chickens might have been eaten

If you cover the run, you don't have to hunt the coyotes.
Not necessarily, A coyote will dig under fences to get to your flock. Once they find a food score (Your chickens) They will come back when they get hungry since they Know that there are chickens around. I think what BYC910 meant was to cover the run so the chickens can't get out while there is a coyote problem.

That is how I interpreted the comment as well. And a skirt of wire around the base of the run is enough to keep them from digging under.

I get that people are protective of their chickens. But it seems a quick rush to predator hunting, when a bit more attention to coop/run security is easier and more successful in the long term.

They haven't returned yet. I'm assuming they're gone for good :(.

Their stupid curiosity got them killed. My neighbor reported seeing them up the street at a cul de sac which borders a foresty area. I have one chicken left that is fortunately too timid to jump the fence.

Poor hennie :( Sorry for your loss. You may be aware of it, but that last little hen is gonna need a friend or two now that the others are gone. You can try your state thread here on BYC or the buy/sell/trade to see if anyone near you has a hen or two that you could snag.
