I think some of my birds have been found!!!

You should be able to press charges. It doesn't matter what is stolen from you (or how much it's worth). If's against the law to steal someone else's property.

Definitely take a police officer with you; he'll be able to make his report based on his eyewitness account rather than a she-said/she-said.

I am so glad for you. I wondered the same thing about pressing charges with my cat. All you have is circumstantial evidence since you did not see her actually taking them. She will just lie about how she came to get them. If I were you I would just let it go, and rethink my security measures. Maybe an action motivated camera set up or locks.

Let this be a lesson for all of us, its never to early to teach our chooks about stranger danger.....

When are you going to find out?

I dont really get it, why would she take them from you only to turn them over to a foster home? Does she not like your set up for them or something and thinks she is saving them???? I worked at a vets where a lady who ran a rescue organization would "rescue" outdoor cats from peoples yards. She didnt think that cats should be aloud outside so she figured any cat left out was in need of her rescue.

Crazy people?????!!!!!

I think if the woman surrendering them to your friend says she "rescued" them from abuse, she may just claim that the person she supposedly seized them from was the one who stole them. The police can make a report, but they likely won't place any blame.

Consider that the person trying to turn them in may truly have "rescued them" from whoever did steal them.

Good point...I never thought of that.

I got back five. Only five, but five. My friend said the lady must have just dropped them off and left. They just were on her porch in a dog crate. She called me to come check them out and, sure enough, there was my Sicily and a few of the girls.

I got back:

Hens
1 RIR
1 New Hampshire (Lucy - my daughter's chicken)
1 Speckled Sussex
1 Australorp

and my Sicilian Buttercup rooster.

I guess I'll never know my mystery thief. I sure hope she brings in the rest of my chickens.
