I was just given two female Bettas and don't know what to do now.

i have a small school of females in my 29 gallon community tank and they generally do fine. i also have a halfmoon plekat (sp?) male in a small 2 gallon kritter keeper within the tank resting along the inner rim so it stays at the surface. he can still see the other fish but can't get to them and it seems to work quite well. i keep a small airator in there (for water movement), a few fake plants and a blue mystery snail to help keep thing clean. i just have to make sure the water level in there is a bit higher than the rest of the tank so it's heavy enough not to float away or turn over the setup works very well.

No.

As many have told you, you may be able to keep the two females together. Personally, I would give them the tank and put the male in a nice large bowl or something, females enjoy swimming a bit more with their smaller fins, and it will be less containers for you to clean

You cannot keep the male with the females. Well I suppose you could, if you think your male would be prettier with no fins left?

When I spawn my Bettas, and they are ready for spawning, bubblenest and dropping eggs and all, I still have males come out of the breeding tank after 1 or 2 days with half their fins gone. Females with missing fins as well and often missing scales. Not to mention run ragged and exausted, they spend the whole time chasing each other, and it's not all about the breeding. Bettas have a love/hate attitude for other Bettas. One big reason that females get along is that they both can swim quickly and so get a bit bored chasing each other. They can still kill each other though.

I have a Male and Female Betta that are together and have had no problems. Well I didn't until they decided to breed, I should of know that would happen

At that point I had to remove the female because the male was very aggressive towards her. The eggs never hatched so I waited about 3 weeks and then put her back in with him. They haven't had any issues with each other nor have they tried to breed again

Which is fine with me! I really think that is depends on the fish, I have had some that get along great and others that hate each other.

Thanks everyone for the replies!

I came home and one of my females had died

I put my male ( Cesar, my mom named him

) in a vase. He is very unhappy with the downgrade but my female LOVES the upgrade! I noticed that she seems swollen? Or I guess very round/plump? Hard to really explain, and I noticed she has vertical stripes. Is this just her coloring? I was just wondering because both females looked identical but the other one was not huge like her and didn't have these stripes.

Thanks again everyone!

My friend had a male betta, and two females together, the male killed both the females. I found out one a fish forum that it is not uncommon for males to do that. I think the females would be alright together, but don't, DON'T put the male with either of the females!

vertical stripes can also be her acknowleging the male in a good way. I have to chime in...I had a 20 gallon tank with mosquito fish and four female bettas....AND a male loose in the tank. Everyone did fine, and I kept them like that for years with no issues...kindof like providing a rooster with enough females to give attention to, my male betta did fine with having that many females, and everyone got along *shrug* I did have a heavily planted tank, but even in that small aquarium, they all got along just fine

Thanks everyone for the replies! She definitely has breeding stripes, I guess that why she's so fat? I wish my camera wasn't broken so I could take a picture of her. I put Cesar in the vase because my mom wants to put him in her room and doesn't have room for the 5 gallon. I still have there tanks set up next to each other and Cesar has made a bubble nest
