I Will Stop Candling I Will Stop Candling

Good luck with that! I have made that same vow more times than I can count, and have yet to follow through with it

My sister-in-law is a vet, but her specialty is in pathology

She is stationed at Walter Reed in DC. She is able to help me some with my chicken questions. I have always been fascinated with genetics. I am about to start Working on a Sizzle pen and showgirls, and I have been doing a lot of reading about the NN and F genes. I'm still in the beginnings of trying to figure this stuff out. I'm hatching some showgirls now and have 4 frizzled babies. So, hopefully I will be armed with the knowledge I need by Spring. Who am I kidding?...... It will probably be all trial and error.

Ok, appreciating my hubby more and more! He does not care what, how many etc as long as I don't expect him to do the work...

Just to keep on topic

YES, I candled eggs today! Only the paints actually, they are on day 5 and I could see development in 8 of the 12 so far!

well, i'm learning as i go on the genetics too... some things are just selection issues for me. egg size, body size, things like that... and i'm trying to learn the in's and out's of conformation for the dorkings (my breed of choice for meat/egg) and for the bantam cochins (breed of choice for FUN!)

i've only had the 3 adult dorkings since monday, and over a doz eggs in the 'bator on day 12 now. bantam cochins have been #1 for me since... since my advisor at UMaine gave me a couple 'cull' hens of his because the color wasn't quite right. LOL even so, i think blue /splash will always be a top ranking color for me.

i have a little red cochin girl, and tho she's sweet, she is flawed... but i don't hold it against her. she's hatchery stock and i knew that when i got her from TSC. her body /legs/head aren't bad, it's her wings that are 'wonkety'... the flight feathers stack backwards from the way they should, and she has no secondaries. i think that's called 'split' wing... so if i ever intend to breed for quality, she won't be in the lineup. she'll just be out to pasture and laying tasty eggs.

This past weekend I bought a SQ pair of Blue Splash Old English Games. Absolutely gorgeous birds

Well, I guess we got off topic. Maybe I will catch you in the genetics thread.
