If you hear another language in public it doesn't mean that those speaking it can't speak English. It is merely a personal bias against those speaking the language spilling over.

Florida, Texas, New Mexico, Nevada, Arizona, California, and Colorado's first European language was Spanish; Lousianna's was French, as were parts of the Northeast, and Alaska's first European language was Russian. Maybe we should all be speaking those languages. The US does not have an official language, and I kinda like it that way.

I seem to remember someone trying to make English an official language here and it got voted down.

You know what does annoy me though? When I play with my cell phone settings and change the language by accident. Then I can't figure out how to change it back. Fortunately I have kids around.

To add to what D1 said, I think many parents do not have a clue how awful their kids behave in school. At our local university years ago, there was a program of staff meetings to improve the campus environment. We met in small groups. I remember the moderator asked us to go around the room and say what we disliked the most about our jobs. Most of us said things like "inventory." One quiet custodian in his mid 30s said the thing that he disliked the most was cleaning feces off the stair handrail. That college kid, no doubt, thought that was original and hilarious, and I bet his parents would never believe he would do such a gross thing.

During my years there, several girls were in the local jail for being drunk. Call it sexist but for some reason I always felt a sadness to hear that. Maybe because they would be mothers one day, I don't know. Odds are their parents never knew about it because the students tended to protect one another.

These 18 year olds were suddenly turned loose and some went wild. I noticed that when a girl's father came to campus for orientation, odds were better that the girls were more stable and centered. These kids bring a lot of baggage with them. We had some really great students and fortunately they are the ones I mostly remember. We also had some very bright and talented students. There were times we laughed so hard in my office that my stomach hurt.

I can't believe some of you are really saying it's offensive to speak a foreign language in the United States. Really reaching for reasons to complain now.

I have no problem saying that people who choose to move here need to make an effort to learn English. I agree that if you are going to live in a country, you should make a concerted effort to learn the language of that country. I don't understand why anyone would be offended at simply hearing another language being spoken out in public. How can it possibly harm someone to hear another language being spoken?

I don't think thats what the guy in the OPs post was trying to say...
