That's hard! I am sorry you had to go through that.

Hi all!
I'm new to chickens but have quickly become obsessed with BYC! I have around 50 birds right now but I've read a lot about chicken math, so I don't think 50 is the final number. I'm in Northern Iowa (close to Clear Lake) anyone else near by?

To Karimw: Sorry about the loss of your friend

I saw someone posted a while ago about looking for a bantam for their daughter. Did that person ever find one? I'd love to know how that turned out and if I could help.

Does anyone in the the Des Moines area or southwest toward Winterset or Creston have Speckled Sussex or Welsummer's? I am working on my chicken math for next year and trying to decide what to get and these 2 breeds are a couple of several I think I want to add to my mix.

I don't have an incubator yet and may have to do some talking to get that one done yet!

I'm in Creston and have Rhode Island Reds (single comb and rose comb), blue/black/splash orpingtons, cuckoo marans and blue/black ameracaunas if you'd like to add any of those to your flock.

Emptynest, I will keep that in mind for early next year. I don't dare add anymore pullets right now but I was thinking about buff orpingtons and americana's as well as a few others for next year. I want to get them as day old chicks when I do get them. I wish I had an incubator but I have to do this in baby steps....lol. I just really want those Welsummers and Sussex. So that is why I am planning already trying to figure out what I am going to do.

To those of you looking for birds, I might suggest coming to the fair. It is my understanding that they have quite a sales section with folks from MO, KS, OK, WI, IL, NE and everywhere coming anything is possible!
I think getting together would be a great idea but why not at the fair? There must be a hot dog stand somewhere? I have not been there in 30 yrs...

but assume they have food?

Hey Bonder, I am located in Chucktown-Charles City, work in Mason where my boss and I maintain a flock.

Hey all,
Just curious... what are the laws in IA regarding selling eggs or processed chicken? We are just getting started and recently I have had someone ask me about buying chickens from me, like the cornish X. I didn't know what the laws were on this. I see signs all over about selling eggs as we pass by farms.

Hey Amy! Sounds like we are pretty close to one another. This is my first go-around with chickens so it's nice to know someone nearby who has some experience. How many are in your flock? What type of chickens do you have? I've got a huge mixture. Thanks for saying hi!
