Icelandic Chickens

Kathy, I told my husband that if anything ever happens to me, he is to mail Elska to you...I even showed him where I have your address and phone number!!!

YAY ! ! !
Well, I do hope nothing happens to you though!

I think I have 3 MORE broodies today. Two more Wheaten Ameraucanas screeched at me from the nest, AND one Icelandic pullet. I will double check at lock up time to see if they are still on nests. PLEASE, NO MORE ! ! I let one Wheatie hatch, and 2 more are sitting. NO MORE ! !

Man I am having a bummer of a day. I dropped the lid of the Brinsea on an egg and smashed it. I don't know why tabletop incubator manufacturers don't make it easier to remove the lid! I have to shove a fingernail into the Styrofoam of the Hovabator to lift that one. The Brinsea top is too wide for arthritic fingers to grasp. So now I am trying to save a baby in a smashed shell with a bleeding membrane. It probably wasn't ready to pip until tomorrow and now it is half out.

So sorry Mary. I was thinking the other day that it was a bit difficult to open the lids on those. I wonder if I could get my DH, "McGyver" to put a handle on it?

They are starting early this year Kathy!

It has been very cold here again. DH had to replace the bulbs in the water heaters since they were not warm enough.

Daron, in the last 6 days I have collected 14 Icelandic eggs. I still have a few more days to go.

Well my poor baby passed.

Wouldn't you know it was a beautiful silver, not that they aren't all precious. Five more have hatched, seven are pipped, and three nothing yet. The buyer is driving down from Oregon tomorrow to pick them up. I hope they are all done and ready to go. I need more Icelandics like I need a hole in the head.

My freak babies moved out to the brooder in the garage today with their Eco-Glow. They sure like it. I have one end lowered almost all the way and they other all the way up. It should work out for them for a long time.

Mary, I'm so sorry you lost the baby.

The freaks look happy! I like the screw things for raising and lowering your Eco Glow. Mine is tabs, but with a screw driver, they are pretty easy to adjust. I found that the plastic cleans up really well on the top of the Eco Glow. The poop dries and flakes right off.

Sorry to hear about the chick and the lid. My wife has had a rather sudden arthritic onset in the past year (runs in her family), and we're learning just how many things there are that require fingernails and hand strength. We've changed the cabinet hardware and doorknobs and were at a loss for some of the "no handle" items like lids for storage bins, storage cans etc. We found some adhesive knobs (think they're called stick-on mirror knobs) and they do the trick. All sorts of shapes and sizes are available. Of course, we'd rather they weren't so necessarily handy in the first place, but since they are we gratefully make use of them.

Nice pictures! The freaks look great!

One of these days I am gonna get one of those! Some day.....
Is that the big one?

My chicks are all outside in the storage garage. I have none inside. I do usually keep them inside the first 2-3 days though. Broody mama doesn't seem to worry nearly as much as I do. She has those babies out in the cold all day long.

I feel your pain sister!!
I just went out to let Bjarthur into the main coop and close the run doors. I checked water and Kella was in a nest. I moved her and finished up. I looked back in on her and she was back in the nest "arranging the hay" neatly around her....so sweet.....NOT!! I have her in with Dreki to get some eggs for Mahonri for the Easter hatch..........NOT so she can go broody and stop laying!! I'll be going back out to feed the barn cats now that it's dark and will put her on the roost, again.......
