Icelandic Chickens

Dar, no hatchathon ???

I will be doing the incubator jig in April, but got an idea of what is coming, some Isi lookalikes, some wheatens and some black breasted red wings. Hoping for a few others but will be happy with all of them.

Not hatching until they can go out of the brooder in May, we are cooler here, in the teens today, was single digit this morn when I got up so wont be setting eggs till end
of march at the earliest.

I am slowly searching for the right home for my furry girls, they are big, mid distance dogs that can pull a big load. I used to do a lot of long weekend winter camping, it takes a strong dog for that in rough country. They gave real meaning to a Four Dog Night.

Good luck with your hatch! Who did you get your eggs from?

Jake - It's nice to "see" you.

Red - sounds like you will know on your pullet when she lays an egg. I'm not familiar with SFH, but someone said they lay brown and Icelandics lay white.

Good luck finding the dogs good homes! You should consider the Easter hatchathon, although its a little bit earlier than you are shooting for.

Its good to be here , and seeing old friends here,

I will miss the Easter hatchathon, just by a week or two,I want my chicks to start hatching about the last week of April, then they will be ready to go from the brooder right into a pen outdoors in late May. We have had too many 'April surprises' here in extreme cold to risk the little guys. Even with a heat lamp I dont want to risk them.

I do want to go to the Chickenstock this year, I will take Isi and some of his girl friends to show, and see all of the others there. I am sorry that I missed it last year.

My other breed will be the Partridge Chantecler, they will have the other side of the chicken house, with outside runs, I will alternate each day with letting each breed roam the property. Same size run and inside of house, layout, the whole thing and same size flocks and then compare them for a year or two for a ranging homestead chicken. I intend to keep track of amount of feed each breed gets. It will be a fascinating comparison of two strong northern breeds. I do expect the Icelandics to do best in ranging, and the Chanteclers to produce the most meat , the rest we shall see. As to eggs and other considerations, that really remains to be seen. It will be a fun project, and to enjoy both breeds. The chicken house will be close to the garden, another interesting observation, I will plant enough for both to browse.

Jake, Good to have you back!

I hope you find the right home for your sled dogs.

I won't be doing the Easter Hatchalong this year either. It falls the end of March this year and is too early for me (also will be gone for a few days during incubation time). With a last-average-frost-date of May 15th, I'm with you on waiting until the end of April and into summer to start hatching. I'll be following the lead of the broody hens.....they know best.

I hope Icelandic have better sense than my Iowa Blues! I have a vicious hen in my breeding pen. Everyone lays in her nest and she keeps the egg warm for me until I come to collect.
