Icelandic Chickens

Thank you Mary, I appreciate it. I think mine is a Farm Innovators, or whatever it is. I do rotate the eggs around in the bator because I found that increased the chances of survival significantly.

I already know the answer, but why do my girls think it's funny to lay their eggs further and further into places where I can't reach? Like under the shed.......behind two wood piles.....oi. It's because they know the human can't resist trying to collect every last precious egg. I think they sit and watch while I'm squirming into the most awkward places to collect eggs.

Okay, I'm starting to get hopeful that I may only have one cockerel in my group of 5-week-old chicks....but I would love a second opinion!

This has to be a pullet, right?? I mean come on! Look how pretty!

Here's her next to my blatantly male chick, and maybe another pullet??

Here's a better picture of "her"??

My little runt in the foreground, and camera shy on the right.

Here's another shot of "camera shy" compared to the male. She's in the back, runt is sitting on the feeder.

I would LOVE some opinions on these babies :) It's so fun to watch their colors develop, they're a little different every day! No crests though :( Hopefully soon it will be warm enough for them to get out into the "nursery" so they can run around a bit. It's getting there, spring is on the way!!

Yay thanks you guys!! I'm going to be pretty stoked to wind up with 4 out of 5 being pullets!! The breeder that I got them from did try to pick out chicks that he thought looked like girls for me, but I was pretty skeptical since they were only a week old when I got them :) Turns out he did pretty well! My little roo has some shank feathering...I can't wait to see what he matures into

Hi,
Red, Do you have one of the Little Giant styrofoam incubators? I found putting small rocks in the bottom to act as a heat sink helped keep temps from fluctuating as much. Also important is to make sure the holes on the bottom of the incubator are not blocked so that there is good air circulation throughout incubation.  Rotating the eggs throughout the incubator also helps keep any variation from causing a problem with an egg or group of eggs that may be too cool or too warm.

That is a great idea about the rocks! I just built an incubator. I think I will try that. Great news! I heard from Lyle Behl and I think I'm going to be able to get eggs from him in May. Has anyone ever gotten eggs either directly or through the mail from him? How were the chicks? Also- Mary I sent you a PM, but I'm not sure if my phone is working. Can you check and see if you got anything from me?
