I am a bit under the weather but I wanted to post a quick update and some pics.
While we were away we lost our beloved Henna to a hawk attack. She was finishing a long course of treatment from internal laying and was very weak. I am certain she was not going to survive but I wanted her to have every chance possible. She had been in a cage for weeks in my kitchen and she was so happy to be back outside. She was just a very sick hen.
RIP Henna. I am certain a number of the naughty little juveniles running around my backyard came from your eggs so you will live on.
Also amongst the losses while we were away were two of Lukka's babies she had hatched the week before we left. We have no idea how they got out or what happened to them. They just came up missing. She is doing a very nice job with her one remaining baby and seems quite content. We have a dozen Icelandic babies running around one of the breeder pens and all are looking good.
On another sad note note, I relocated my rooster Orri who had become very aggressive. Sigrid tells me she has never known an aggressive Icelandic roo so I guess it was just bad luck. He was rough on the hens and flogged every female entering the yard including my granddaughters. My doctor diagnosed the wounds on my ankles as venous stasis ulcers. What a hoot I had saying "or I got flogged by a rooster!"
Isi has taken over as the flock leader and is doing an amazing job. He services all the ladies, silkies included, ( sorry for that visual)
He finds treats and calls his ladies over. Perhaps the only thing keeping him from being the perfect little roo is
HE SINGS THE EGG SONG! Don't start thinking
cute here. It is loud enough to be heard in the next county and so horribly off-key. You would swear there is a murder in progress when he does it. I haven't quite figured out who he sings it for, maybe everyone. I am thinking he'll out grow it, right?
I didn't post any of these events as they happened because I wanted to let Sigrid know personally before I blabbed about it online. She follows this thread. I have heard back from her and feel comfortable posting about it now. She and Sveinn are having fun what looks like perilously close to the volcano from the pictures she has sent! She better knuckle down and get working on that egg export permit!
Anyway, one of the little Icelandic cuties escaped from Juvenile Hall today so I dragged her up to the house for a photo shoot. She is a sweetie with a gorgeous crest that reminds me so much of Henna. Here she is.
I grabbed this little guy while i was down there and brought him up for pics. He was not happy!
Moments after the last shot he flew straight up, thru the wax-paper-covered hole in my lightbox, throwing the lamp onto the floor and breaking it!
Are you picking him up Kelly or should I deliver?
