Notafarm.. I will definitely be posting pictures as they all feather out... That's half the fun I think with the Icelandics... guessing what they will end up like... The other half would be trying to keep tabs on them
Mahonri.. I am soooooo glad it isn't 96 here... I grew up in St George without air conditioning and anything over 90 is too hot for me... If I had my choice, 80-85, an occasional cloud and a slight breeze would be perfect 9 months out of the year.. that would leave a month of Fall, one of Winter and one of Spring...
Kathy I've been trying to get a few nice silkies for my kids to have as pets... and that I could use as egg warmers... I had 31 eggs shipped from 3 sources a few months ago and had 0 hatch... I had a trade worked out for chicks this month but they must have changed their minds as they aren't responding to my emails.. oh well.. I'm sure I'll find some eventually.. Maybe I'll just have them each pick out an Icelandic instead!!
Mary.. here's hoping you wake up to more than 3 running around! When is your cutoff to head to the PO tomorrow? I hope the one that's not doing well perks up for you even if it isn't shipped.. Is it the one that still had some yolk?
Can't wait for Thursday!! I have faith it will only take one day for them to get here.... California is way closer than Missouri right??
Yes Shawn it is the one with the yolk not absorbed. It rallied a bit today but now can't stand or hold it's head up. It just sleeps a lot in a fetal position. Good grief I need hand lotion STAT!
I mixed up a tiny bit of the Grow-Gel for the babies to try out and there is an absolute frenzy in there! They are devouring every bit if it. Expect green poop.
Oh, and one of the babies looked like it just might have been developing a spraddle leg on one side but I wasn't sure. I didn't want to take a chance that it would happen in the shipping box so I put a band-aid hobble on it yesterday. It is running around with everyone else and I have to turn them all over to find out which one it is. I am going to leave it on just in case. I usually leave them on for three days.
No more news on the other three viable eggs. Update tomorrow. I have to be at the postal hub before 11:00 a.m. It is about an hour's drive so I usually leave at 9:00 to allow for traffic. So if they aren't running around yelling "send me to Idaho" in the morning they won't make the cut.
Before I go to bed I have to share two more pictures. This was one of the roos I decided to keep. I had two nearly identical ones but the other was a lot bigger and had some funky fluffy white feathers at the tail. I had watched them for the last few weeks to see who was more of a gentlemen. I decided that this was the guy to keep. The other one liked to walk right up to me and walk down to the barn right next to my legs. He was a little too familiar. I got the feeling he was going to be aggressive with me at some point so the little guy won. Today I threw out bread for a treat and he didn't eat a single piece. He picked them up and dropped them at the hen's feet. I am going to need a name for him. He's a keeper for sure. I'll get pics tomorrow of the other little guy who got to stay. He is gorgeous too.
And, I thought this was crack up. The babies had their first day outside and they ran across the yard for treats. It was the first time they had traets too. They didn't even know what they were running for! So cute.
Run, babies, run! hahaha, that is so cute! They look great!
Yes, I like the looks of the boy you kept! He reminds me a little of Romeo, and everyone comments how gorgeous he is.
We have kept 4 boys here. It has been difficult keeping the 2 younger boys penned. I hate that they have no girls yet. Romeo is such a womanizer. Today I let everyone out. OMG, Romeo tried to breed every girl within a mile.
I think I may pull out all the boys, and give the girls a break.
How's the little one today? I'm glad you kept that roo instead of the other one, I think he's more handsome. (and he's obviously a gentleman) Love the babies running for treats too.
