Ok- so what I got from all that mumbo jumbo is this: People don't like it, some variations cause early death in chicks, it can be a problem (as with frizzles) in cold climates.

Sooooo....since it is stinkin' hot here, she'll be fine.

Of course, since all the mumbo jumbo says the frayed feathering is a result of redonkulous inbreeding, it just means we'll all have to get some more eggies and hatch, hatch, hatch!

For the good of the breed, of course.

At what age will I notice crests? Do you remember? I am so anxious and excited about this bunch growing out!

Kathy on the crests I have been seeing them in the first week, all by the end of the 2nd week.

There does seem to be a gradation of them, some are just there and some are wild ala Joan Rivers.

But they look better on the chickens then her.

Mary, ref the crests, what percentage of your roos and hens would you say are crested?

Until the latest chicks arrived from you I had just about 60-40% of no crests, then when Blau and the Contessa and the chicks came its now the other way, about 60% are crested, and there is some variation in amount of the crests, some have much more.

Of the single combs I only have several, one of being Isison. There will be one other, the largest roo out of this last batch, and one other roo which is crested, so I will have five roos, 3 rose or cushion and 2 SC. And 3 crested.

Of the pullets the total works out to be about half crested and half not, I will count them this week. The colors are almost half darker and half lighter. Lots of variations.

Re: Crests. I have lost count since the predator problem. The new automatic door was installed today so I have to go down when I want it to open in the morning and program it. I will try to count crests as they pop through the door. That should be interesting.
