I have a Maremma Sheepdog. When he first arrived he was so cute and little...
But now that it's been a few weeks, he is still really cute, but getting bigger all the time. He is the most wonderful sheepdog, he watches EVERYTHING! This is his normal pose, very calm but attentive. And he's so very furry! That collar is so loose I can fit all my fingers under it with room to spare but look how much fur sprouts out around it.
6 hawks here, possibly 7. They hit an uncovered pen, of course. I lost 3 Barred Rock kids and 1 (maybe 2) Delaware kids. I scooped them all up and locked them inside their coop. Haven't had time to count for sure. None of the birds were out free ranging today, as we were expecting rain and storms. Everyone in their pens. Tyler caught them in the act. All the birds went inside, except the roosters, of course. They all knew what was happening. They are all still reluctant, but will come out while I am out there.
Broody mama and babies stayed in too. They even looked scared.
I did not know hawks came in groups! OMG, they were everywhere! Scary. They all went for the same pen. A pen of young birds, not the layers coop (which is not covered). It was this pen (picture from a couple days ago). I believe they got 3 BR, 1 NH, and 1 Del.
It was a sight to behold, when I got out there. I, personally, saw 4 of the hawks. 1 was absolutely huge. The astonishing thing I immediately noticed was the dead silence and no chickens outside, EXCEPT roosters. My layers coop has 5 males (I forgot one, as I thought I only had 4 in there). The 5 roosters, George (Project F1), Frenchy (BCMarans), Beau (BLRW), a Wheaten Ameraucana, and a Silver Laced Wyandotte were all standing around the perimeter of the layers coop, as if stationing themselves for an attack. They were quietly pacing the fence line, working together. It was dead quiet out there. My breeder pens looked empty except for the Barred Rock males being out. The others were all inside. Oh, wait..... 2 Icelandic boys were out, too.
I so wish I could have videoed such a sight. Sickening carnage, yet impressive (my flock). I have my netting out, and it will be put in place on the remaining pens tomorrow. No one will be out freeranging. The pens with no netting will stay inside until it is up, except the layers coop. I am not covering the layers coop pen.
