Icelandic Chickens

mbmess2003 hatched some from my flock for the NYD hatchalong. Forsaela, the black pullet I got from kathyinmo, was in the breeding pen. I thought he might get a black chick but he did not. syount is CA is hatching some now from the same pen (shipped a few days after mbmess'). I am looking forward to seeing what he got.

Elska did not have any black chicks in her August clutch (I'm sure all but possibly one are from her own eggs).....

...but one that was dark brown with a white bib started looking nearly black within a month...
on the far right in this pic.....

The white breast/bib at hatch, I believe, signals the mottled gene. They have to have two copies to express it but I think those that carry one copy will have a bib. Just something I'm noticing in my flock. I only started with one mottled pullet and now have a daughter of hers (Elska) and two of her "grandchicks" that are mottled. Dreki is a son of Anna, my original mottled hen, so your Drekkette and other chicks you hatched from me last spring may carry that gene.
I love the fact that you never know what you're going to get.....they are all unique and beautiful!

Hmmm, interesting. One of my cockerels was dark brown as a chick, then had a lot of black on him at a couple months of age:

He does have some light mottling on his breast and belly, too. When Flekka was little, she was pure yellow. I didn't get a picture of her until she was close to two weeks old, I think.

So if the bib can signify the mottling, then I would like to see chicks that come from flocks with heavy mottling, such as back east. I'm curious to see if other spangled Icelandics are a solid color, like Flekka was.

Quote: Red, I can see in this picture that she has a "bib". Even if she was "blonde" at hatch, she shows in the picture above that she had the bib before she got her adult plumage. It would be nice to see some from other flocks. I know that karimw has some that "came round-about" from Behl farms. Maybe she will post and give her opinion on this.

I love the mottling, have only had a minimal amount, I would love to get some eggs this spring from a flock that has it. I am still also wanting crests and feathered legs.

I agree, the variety in Icelandics is great ! I love it.

Life is good, and better with Icelandic Chickens !

Yep, I got some from Wool Farm and had several mottled birds. I hatched 6 of the dozen eggs shipped, but lost 4 to the fox this summer.

This is Louis

Cowboy, my favorite friend this spring, liked to ride on my shoulder at chore time.,Sadly he refused to go in the coop at a very early age, preferring to roost in the rafters where I couldn't reach him. I assume the coons got him.

Princess, the pullet on the right I still have. This boy had the most mottling.

They were a very pretty group.
