Icelandic Chickens

Thanks! It was too bad, but there was clearly something very wrong with the chick. It wasn't wry neck, it was some sort of brain issue I believe. I think the runt is probably going to be just fine, it's running around like crazy! I'll keep an eye on it but I'm optimistic.

Beautiful pics everyone!

I took two eggs out of the incubator, due to hatch today, and put them under The Divine Miss M. She wasn't even broody! You'd think she had been sitting on them for three weeks. She growled everytime I went in the coop today. I installed an additional 20 feet of roost space and she growled the whole time like I was there to steal her babies, which up until this morning, had been MY babies! Crazy silkies. Blue Mama is sitting on 4 Icelandic eggs due next week. I kept crazy Lukka in a wire crate for 36 hours with just food and water to try to break her broody. I put her back with the flock today and she seems fine. She'll probably be sitting again tomorrow though!

Ok, and check this out. For two years I have had four little wooden chicks glued to a sign on my coop. It says "In memory of my grandmother, Alice Bell." It is down near the ground by the pop door. Today I found the little wooden chicks in the corner of the yard in a neat little pile! They didn't fall off and blow into the corner, they were pecked off and put in the corner. I gathered them up and plan to use wood glue to re-attach them tomorrow. I am thinking Lukka walked by, saw them and said "Oh look, baby chicks." Had I not found them, she would probably have been sitting on them tomorrow.

Here they are!

My last two hatched. One is dark, the other very multi colored. They are dry enough to move to the brooder. So, for me the hatching is done until the dozen that are due the day before Thanksgiving. Plus the two under Miss M due today and the four under Blue Mama due next week. If all hatch I will have 40 Icelandic chicks! I should get some good pairs and trios for the show and sale in Stockton the end of January, right?

Here's my most recent two.

So I am shipping test eggs now and not setting anymore until December 11th. I agreed to join Mahonri's Annual New Year's Nervous Breakdown Hatch-a-long. But just for kicks I may decide to set something other than Icelandics. (Then keep one and give the rest away!)

Not till I get one! Who knows what these guys will look like in three weeks!

I have four little Icelandics who are ten weeks old today. Three are roos of course and one pullet. Yesterday Michael and I were sitting in the yard and this adorable little roo hopped up on the arm of a lawn chair, strained his little neck and let out the most pathetic crow you have ever heard in your life. He repeated x 3 then hopped back down. We laughed ourselves silly.

Mary.... They are so cute! I just love the dark ones! Maybe you'll get your mottled female this time. So, whatcha going to hatch for me, huh? Since I take your "extra's".
