Icelandic Chickens

Isn't it just so funny that they want a dust bath inside when they have the entire outside they can use!

I am happy to announce that my winter brooders in the storage garage are ALL empty, (well, except for the ghetto brooder). Storage garage will soon be closed for the season!

Somebody wanna come help me clean up now? I have sold and given away about 150 chickens and chicks locally this past week (besides my shipments). I actually have some empty pens, too!

My flock(s) are in 6ft chain link fenced runs with either tin or tarp roof (we have alot a eagles & hawks)
inside my 8ft privacy fenced yard

across the road the farm has ALOT of goats and we have seen foxes hit by cars recently. I figured my girls are safe, guess not.

Time for those red blinking lights Andy was talking about.

Good morning everyone!!

It's another cold morning in Idaho today but I am one more day closer to bringing Icelandics to this frigid part of the world!! Yea!! only 15 more days till the scheduled set date of the first Icelandic eggs in Idaho.. WOOT!! I sure hope I get as great of birds as everyone else has been hatching... since they're coming from The Warden, I should

Warden on the bonus question I got to go with Phyllis Diller too, that is really what I would call a fright wig !

The blinking red lights do help to deter predators, for awhile, but they can get used to them, they work best longest if on an intermittent timer. Wild animals hunting around homes get used to strange things very fast. Chain link runs are very good, with tops.

I'm hoping that we don't have any problem with predators out where we are moving onto 10 acres this year.. I know the neighbor has hens free ranging without a run and to my knowledge has not lost a bird. I am planning runs as well as ccops so I am hoping I'll be in good shape. This property is outside of town so I'm planning for most eventualities just in case... First run is in the works.. just waiting for a day or two of nicer weather to finish it.. This one is planned for longterm use as a grow out run.

My fox climbed a 6 foot fence to get one of my hens.

WHAT?????? Fox can climb a fence???? OH CRAP ! ! !

Yep, it climbed my 6 foot fence into my run, took my hen and climbed back over - all during the day. I was hoping to trap the thing, but no such luck. But I guess I should be happy I haven't caught any raccoons or anything.
